How would you feel receiving piano lessons from a world-renowned and seasoned concert pianist? Indeed, such sessions would be delightfully challenging and insightful ones, as you're inclined to receive all his instructions without question and with full confidence in his expertise and abilities. This is also the attitude that one should adopt when going through Mark Hambourg's This How to Play the Piano. The author himself recommends any piano student to have a "really good and experienced professor" - someone which the famous pianist himself was although he did not insinuate his credentials in this way. He dispenses practical advice regarding the maintenance of one's health as a performer and the decorum one must adopt in performing in public. Hambourg also includes a number of helpful illustrations that the reader can follow easily. He tackles the basics in playing the piano and moves things gradually to the more challenging aspects of performing with such an instrument, such as using the pedal and "making the piano sing." In addition to these, the Russian-British musician also gives tips on selecting and caring for your own piano. Though this volume may be written many decades ago, the principles and tips laid out by its author are still relevant and applicable to the modern piano student, whether young or old, naturally adept or just plain curious. Readers will also get more insights on what it takes to be a committed performer through Hambourg's non-musical advice and be inspired by his words. Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them by Charles W. Wilkinson is a rare gem for music lovers. Hidden within its many pages are pearls of wisdom which aspiring or even well-trained musicians may not find elsewhere. Wilkinson has undertaken the rather mammoth task of deconstructing some of the finest pianists' style of playing and provided the reader with a detailed analysis of some of the best known piano solos of all time. Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them provides an engaging analysis of the very basis of any composition and Wilkinson's style of writing not only allows the reader to step in to the shoes of famous pianists but also encourages young students to master the technique of playing the piano correctly with numerous mentions of measures, dots, bars and chords. Some of the pianists who find their place in this work include Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy and Grieg among others. Even without a separate section on musical notations for each of the pieces described in this work, Wilkinson is able to provide the reader with pointers on mastering them quickly. Wilkinson takes up individual pieces and in the course of explaining the technicalities of playing them correctly, provides a treasure trove of information and trivia which readers may not find in other books. His narrative on Chopin and Bach especially is worth mentioning as he skilfully simplifies some of the most complex piano compositions of these legends. Since this is not a purely technical work, Well-Known Piano Solos: How to Play Them would provide immense pleasure to casual enthusiasts and trained pianists alike. Excerpt from Piano Playing: A Little Book of Simple Suggestions I should like to reiterate at this point two words which I used in the second paragraph: the words consciously or unconsciously. A brief comment upon this alternative may lead to observations which may throw a light upon the matter of reading between the lines, especially as I am rather strongly inclining toward the belief in the unconscious side of the alternative. Excerpt from Primer of Pianoforte Playing Simplest, and will require but brief consideration. It is obvious that the notes in staccato accompaniment must be light and delicate, and not strong enough to interfere with the melody which they accompany. When they are required to be soft, and yet bright in tone and distinctly articulated, which is often the case, they must be played with a steady hand, the fingers being held in a bent position and with little or no movement of the joints, and the hand lifted from the key with great rapidity, but to a very short distance. This movement, which is very slight though quick, comes from the action of the elbow-joint, and the tone produced is crisp and short, with very little percussion. This touch is suitable for such passages as the bass in the Scherzo of Beethoven's Sonata in E flat, op. 31, No. 3, or the chords of the right hand in the 108th and following bars of the first movement of the same. Excerpt from The Art of Pianoforte Playing 1n offering to the public a short Treatise on the Theory and Practice of pianoforte-playing, it has been my endeavour to write in the plainest, the most concise, and the most practical manner. Giving the result of my long experience as a teacher, I have included in this work those phases of pianoforte playing which, occurring daily, may be considered as forming the basis of a good, solid, and correct execution. The position of the. Performer at the instrument - the method of producing, by means of a good, distinct touch, a full and rich, yet delicate and subtle tone - the practical manner of studying and playing the scales - the execution of the shake - the chords, firm and broken - the double passages part-playing - all these are essential constituents of an efficient and artistic performance; and to explain these different matters in a Clear yet not too elaborate manner, has been my endeavour throughout. This book is intended for the use of pupil and teacher alike. The pupil may, I think, learn from it many matters for whose elucidation the teacher finds no time during the lesson; while to the teacher the little work may prove useful as a kind of text-book, which he must. Excerpt from Progressive Series of Piano Lessons: Junior Course When sitting at the piano the player should be facing the middle of the keyboard, a little to the right of Middle C. It is very important that you always remember to sit in this position, for as you practice you will get used to reaching just far enough up and down, and your arm muscles will begin to guide you to the right keys in any octave, without the help of your eyes. Excerpt from The Art of the Pianist: Technic and Poetry in Piano Playing, for Teacher and Student I realized, later on, that I should have begun my piano study with a foundation of principles, and carried it on along educational lines; that I should have used my hands Without fear, in vigorous practice, and in other manual occupa tions. I would then have accomplished all I have done in a quarter of the time it has taken me to do it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
