Academic success for African American boys’ in Special Education is frequently elusive as the United States continues to endure the legacy of academic discrimination (Blanchett, 2010; Skiba et al., 2008). Consequently, educational policies have not fully protected the equal rights or adequately responded to the learning needs of students’ academic shortcomings or taken advantage of their strengths (Parkinson & Rowan, 2008; Tatum, 2005). This persistent reading gap has not closed in generations, which is deeply harmful to our American democracy (Wolf, 2019). With every passing year that goes by without alleviating problems affecting the reading gap, the damage is costly, and no failure is more expensive than the failure to educate African American males in the PK-12 pipeline (Robinson & Thompson 2019). The danger to our students becomes more critical each year, and these are problems that are deeply rooted in America. And, while teachers cannot change the past, we can, and must, change the special education system that shapes the future of students. Thus, a reader’s identity becomes shaped by the intersection of factors that are both inherent and neurologically based, and factors that arise as a result of one’s home and academic environment (Hoyles & Hoyles, 2010; Robinson, Ford, Ellis, & Hartlep, 2016; Wolf, 2007). Reading instruction must be culturally relevant which can strengthen the reader’s identity and capacity for critical thinking (Arya & Feathers, 2012; Flowers, 2007; Robinson, 2017). Critical literacy is grounded in the sociocultural perspective and way of thinking about curriculum, literacies, and honoring students’ lived experiences, especially within the contexts of Special Education (Brooks, 2006; Gay, 2002; Norman, 2011). This edited book will fill a needed gap in scholarly research, as manuscripts adopts a critical analysis that brings together the latest theoretical, conceptual, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research studies. Chapters will have clear and explicit implications for educational practice and make a significant contribution to the field of special education and reading instruction.

This book provides the profession with across-discipline illustrations of classroom assignments that utilize and develop the mind’s innate but informal gift to think critically. By applying the universal gift formally, faculty, for the first time, can lead all students to think, read, listen, write, speak, and observe critically while concurrently comprehending new and revisited subject matter. This work is for use as a textbook in teacher preparation and professional development programs. Teacher-educators, teacher-candidates, school and college faculty, and professional developers are shown how to explicitly apply mind grammar to the design of classroom assignments. Disadvantaged, English language learners, general, and special education students will all have their innate abilities to reason critically nurtured and developed. Teach Like the Mind Learns, along with Fixing Instruction and Preparation for Critical Instruction, provides the teaching profession with ownership - as with doctors, engineers, and lawyers – of its language, standards, preparation, and practice. The merging of subject matter instruction with the development of critical language abilities is now a reality for the teaching profession. The consequences are that faculty practice and student achievement will be substantially more tangible, respected, and universally prized.

The Case For Critical Literacy written by Alice S. Horning and has been published by University Press of Colorado this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Case for Critical Literacy explores the history of reading within writing studies and lays the foundation for understanding the impact of this critical, yet often untaught, skill. Every measure of students’ reading comprehension, whether digital or analog, demonstrates that between 50 and 80 percent of students are unable to capture the substance of a full discussion or evaluate material for authority, accuracy, currency, relevancy, appropriateness, and bias. This book examines how college-level instruction reached this point and provides pedagogical strategies that writing instructors and teachers can use to address the problem. Alice Horning makes the case for the importance of critical reading in the teaching of writing with intentionality and imagination, while sharing glimpses of her own personal history with reading and writing. Horning provides the context for understanding what college faculty face in their classrooms and offers a history of critical literacy that explains why, to date, it has mostly neglected or ignored the diverse statuses of students’ reading challenges. The Case for Critical Literacy explores actionable options to better meet students’ literacy needs. College and university faculty, especially writing instructors, will benefit from an understanding of what has happened in the field and what needs to change.
