An energetic new translation of an ancient Roman masterpiece about a failed coup led by a corrupt and charismatic politician In 63 BC, frustrated by his failure to be elected leader of the Roman Republic, the aristocrat Catiline tried to topple its elected government. Backed by corrupt elites and poor, alienated Romans, he fled Rome while his associates plotted to burn the city and murder its leading politicians. The attempted coup culminated with the unmasking of the conspirators in the Senate, a stormy debate that led to their execution, and the defeat of Catiline and his legions in battle. In How to Stop a Conspiracy, Josiah Osgood presents a brisk, modern new translation of the definitive account of these events, Sallust’s The War with Catiline—a brief, powerful book that has influenced how generations of readers, including America’s founders, have thought about coups and political conspiracies. In a taut, jaw-dropping narrative, Sallust pleasurably combines juicy details about Catiline and his louche associates with highly quotable moral judgments and a wrenching description of the widespread social misery they exploited. Along the way, we get unforgettable portraits of the bitter and haunted Catiline, who was sympathetic to the plight of Romans yet willing to destroy Rome; his archenemy Cicero, who thwarts the conspiracy; and Julius Caesar, who defends the conspirators and is accused of being one of them. Complete with an introduction that discusses how The War with Catiline has shaped and continues to shape our understanding of how republics live and die, and featuring the original Latin on facing pages, this volume makes Sallust’s gripping history more accessible than ever before.

Here is an eleven word horror story. Research shows we change our minds based on feelings, not facts. In this booklet, you can lear how to hijack someone's brain. If you have ever asked yourself one of the following: How do people fall down the rabbit hole of conspiracy videos? Why are they willing to believe a random video instead of experts? Fake News isn't a new phenomena but why is it uniquely dangerous now? How can you get through to someone who is in too deep? Can you have a conversation with a person when talking to them is like talking to a brick wall? Why facts won't change people's minds? Then this quick easy scientifically-backed booklet is for you.In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous conspiracy theories have emerged and gained a foothold in the public perception. About 30% of Americans surveyed believe COVID-19 is of a manmade rather than natural origin. Such beliefs erode trust in public institutions such as the CDC or the World Health Organization and are counterproductive in that they weaken efforts to manage the pandemic, sow seeds of discord and increase feelings of anxiety, and prevent a unified response on multiple levels. There are a variety of reasons that draw people to conspiracy theories, mainly centering around need fulfillment as some serve to meet an unmet social, epistemic, or existential desire. Research has shown that facts alone do not change people's mind, might backfire in some cases, and that knowledge or education do not adequately protect individuals from COVID-19 conspiracy theories. To this the end, I propose we approach debunking COVID-19 conspiracy theories in a different manner- that we do not address conspiracy theories based on facts but rather based on feelings. We should attempt to address the psychology behind beliefs rather than beliefs themselves. This booket deals with 6 strategies that attempt to just that : 1) empathetic listening and modifying our language, 2) tailoring the message to the receiver through neuro-linguistic programming, 3) allowing the receiver to maintain their self-image/give them an "out" 4) empower or affirm the individual, 5) inoculating individuals and 6) "stopping the spread" of fake news by retooling technology to be a help rather than hindrance.

Conspiracies And Conspiracy Theories In The Age Of Trump written by Daniel C. Hellinger and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-20 with Political Science categories.

This book focuses on the constant tension between democracy and conspiratorial behavior in the new global order. It addresses the prevalence of conspiracy theories in the phenomenon of Donald Trump and Trumpism, and the paranoid style of American politics that existed long before, first identified with Richard Hofstadter. Hellinger looks critically at both those who hold conspiracy theory beliefs and those who rush to dismiss them. Hellinger argues that we need to acknowledge that the exercise of power by elites is very often conspiratorial and invites both realistic and outlandish conspiracy theories. How we parse the realistic from the outlandish demands more attention than typically accorded in academia and journalism. Tensions between global hegemony and democratic legitimacy become visible in populist theories of conspiracy, both on the left and the right. He argues that we do not live in an age in which conspiracy theories are more profligate, but that we do live in an age in which they offer a more profound challenge to the constituted state than ever before.

Who believes in conspiracy theories, and why are some people more susceptible to them than others? What are the consequences of such beliefs? Has a conspiracy theory ever turned out to be true? The Psychology of Conspiracy Theories debunks the myth that conspiracy theories are a modern phenomenon, exploring their broad social contexts, from politics to the workplace. The book explains why some people are more susceptible to these beliefs than others and how they are produced by recognizable and predictable psychological processes. Featuring examples such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and climate change, The Psychology of Conspiracy Theories shows us that while such beliefs are not always irrational and are not a pathological trait, they can be harmful to individuals and society.

Conspiracies and Conspiracy Theory in the Age of Trump stands out in the burgeoning literature on conspiracism with its call for political scientists to analyze not only “conspiracy theory” as political pathology but conspiracies themselves as political behavior symbiotically related to moral hazards and other forces unleashed by dark money, disinformation, changing technologies, and globalization. This new updated edition extends this analysis to the belief by many Americans that the 2020 election was stolen, resistance to social measures to counter the Covid epidemic, attempts by Trump and his allies to “stop the steal,” and the resulting mob insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. We likely will see both conspiracism and actual conspiracies play a greater role due to institutional decay in American politics. For this reason, political scientists need to analyse and theorize the role of conspiracies in politics—why they prosper and fail, how conspiracies may inflect political outcomes, what relationship they bear to social forces unleashed by great economic and social change.
