In late 19th century America, a new image of womanhood was emerging that began to shape public views and understandings of women's role in society. In 1895, determined to be included in their own right, Cleveland, Ohio's women formed the Woman's Department of Cleveland's all-male Centennial Commission, with Mrs. (W.A.) Mary Ingham as president. Their plan was to have exhibits and lectures that would show the progress and status of women's work in philanthropy, education, literature, art, local professions and industrial pursuits. Looking to the future, the women also organized a time capsule for the women of 1996. The sealed box contained documents and artifacts. A unique feature was the inclusion of several questions to those women, and a letter containing advice and directions on how to plan and carry out the next centennial celebration.Using well-documented accounts by the women themselves, and local press reports, this book is intended to give a historical account of their hard work, methods, pitfalls, and successes. This comprehensive historical account leaves lessons to be learned by every generation of women who seek to make a difference. The principles on which they built their plans, their inclusiveness, and the methods by which they achieved their goals provide a perfect example of the "new woman" mindset, and are universally feminist. This book provides a comprehensive account of the work of the Woman's Department from planning to execution and is an excellent resource for anyone thinking about leaving their legacy for future generations.

Whether it is birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Thanksgiving dinners or New Year’s celebrations, we humans demonstrate a peculiar compulsion to celebrate the continuing cycle of the recurrent calendar dates that mark our lives. Public events of the same type evoke an even more pronounced response. The Anniversary Compulsion focuses on Canada’s Centennial celebrations in 1967 as an example of how a classic mega-anniversary can be successfully organized and staged. With wit and wisdom, Peter Aykroyd describes how many of the key elements of Centennial year will undoubtedly be present in the staging of what is bound to be an unprecedented worldwide celebratory outburst – the advent of the 21st century, the Third Millennium.

Excerpt from Centennial Celebration: An Account of the Municipal Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Portland, July 4th, 5th and 6th, 1886 The Petition of the Subscribers - Inhabitants of that part of the Town of Falmouth in the County of Cumberland, commonly called the neck, humbly sheweth, That in their present situation they are destitute of many ad vantages which the inhabitants of maritime towns receive, and which as such they might enjoy if they were incorporated into a different Town. In their present state they suffer much for want of some regular method of employing and supporting the Poor, who are principally resident in that part of the Town, and of repairing and regulating their streets. During the 1976 Bicentennial celebration, millions of Americans engaged with the past in brand-new ways. They became absorbed by historical miniseries like Roots, visited museums with new exhibits that immersed them in the past, propelled works of historical fiction onto the bestseller list, and participated in living history events across the nation. While many of these activities were sparked by the Bicentennial, M. J. Rymsza-Pawlowska shows that, in fact, they were symptomatic of a fundamental shift in Americans' relationship to history during the 1960s and 1970s. For the majority of the twentieth century, Americans thought of the past as foundational to, but separate from, the present, and they learned and thought about history in informational terms. But Rymsza-Pawlowska argues that the popular culture of the 1970s reflected an emerging desire to engage and enact the past on a more emotional level: to consider the feelings and motivations of historic individuals and, most importantly, to use this in reevaluating both the past and the present. This thought-provoking book charts the era's shifting feeling for history, and explores how it serves as a foundation for the experience and practice of history making today.
