Excerpt from How to Teach Natural Science in Public Schools It was clearly seen that the problem demanded an introduction of a popular course of instruction in natural science in such a way as to react bene ficially not only upon the pupil's progress in the regular course, but also upon the teacher's methods and practical skill in imparting information. Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. Excerpt from A Course in Nature Study for Use in the Public Schools The following Bulletin, giving a course in Nature Study for the public schools, is one of the most important and valuable of all of those which the Department has hitherto published. The course was outlined and prepared by Miss Louise Miller, who for several years had charge of Nature Study work in the schools of Detroit, Mich., and will commend itself to natural history teachers as being not only scientifically accurate and exceedingly suggestive, but as also outlining in a systematic way, a branch and method of education peculiarly adapted to country schools. The study of nature, by observing the things themselves, is the new and rational method of instruction and constitutes what now is known by the modern name, "Nature Study." This bulletin is intended as a guide to teachers, indicating the subjects adapted to each grade of scholars, and giving the order in which the subject ought to be pursued. An inspection of the work proposed by this course will show how much there is in the vicinity of every country school to interest and instruct in the numerous natural objects, in regard to which the mass of our population have but little knowledge, and which, if properly presented, may be, at least partially understood, by the smallest pupil. The bulletin is also informal notice to teachers in Pennsylvania that in the near future, such instruction as it outlines, will be required in every country school. Those, therefore, who wish to follow this profession will do well to acquaint themselves with the method here presented, and begin preparation for the work to be performed, so that when their examiners come to question them as to natural objects, whose uses and characteristics they are expected to understand and explain to others, they may be ready to answer intelligently, and satisfactorily perform the duties required. This is no new fad in education, but is older than the Commonwealth itself. William Penn, near the close of his life, in a work entitled Reflections and Maxims, suggested substantially the method now proposed to be pursued in the education of our youth. Excerpt from Report of the Committee on the Teaching of Hygiene in Public Schools It is also partly due to the difference in cost. Physiology and hygiene, and in the great majority of schools the natural sciences have been taught by the general teacher. Domestic science is invariably taught by special teachers when cooking is included, and at least requires special supervisors to guide the general teachers when sewing is taught, while for both more or less special equipment is needed. Although expense has been an Obstacle to rapid extension, probably not over 100 cities having domestic science in their schools, Special teachers on the other hand have produced, are producing unquestionably more definite educational results. In the very few cities where there are special teachers of natural science, particularly in the grades, the educational results are conspicuously superior. Many educators believe nature study under the general teacher is in many cases, not in all, chiefly a way of killing-time. The salaries Of these special teachers vary from $300 to and this indicates fairly the wide range in their qualifications. Not infrequently we find that a general teacher from the grades or a normal graduate spends a few months, possibly a year, in perhaps a school Of local reputation only, cramming so-called domestic science, and begins teaching with this inadequate preparation. Many are high school, normal or college graduates who have taken Special courses Of two or three years at special institutes such as Pratt or Drexel. Another small group, college women as a rule, add to their undergraduate courses in biology and chemistry extended uni versity graduate work in physical sciences, in sociologic studies, and in arts and crafts, and special research work with such eminent scholars as Professor W. O. Atwater and others found at our chief educational centres. Special teachers in biologic subjects, in chemistry, physics, etc., are with very few exceptions in high schools only; are as a rule college men and women, who have had in many cases additional special courses Often indicated by master's or doctor's degrees. The authors Of numerous text books, including text-books on physiology and hygiene, are from these two groups Of specialists. Excerpt from Domestic Science: Principles and Application, a d104book for Schools This textbook is arranged to meet the needs of schools having a two-year course in Domestic Science, and an effort has been made to present the fundamental principles, together with their application, in a simple, natural sequence that is adapted to the needs of the large majority of public and private schools. A text of this kind does away with the keeping of elaborate notebooks on the part of the pupils, saves for more important things the time used in dictating notes, and makes the work more permanent and uniform through out. The arrangement of the subject matter by lessons does not necessarily limit the course to 64 lessons. If the students are old enough, additional reading may be used to supplement the subject matter, and several recipes are given under each application to afford plenty of practical work for classes having more than one lesson each week. The usual length of the class period is 1% hours, and one recipe is all that can be done well in that time.
