Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ...the fuse will melt. But should the resistance of the moisture be far greater than that of the fuse wire, the decomposition of the wire will gradually be accomplished, and as it advances, the heat, and loss of electrical energy in the conductors increases, the lights become dimmer, and the carrying capacity of the wire decreases, to the point where it melts instead of the fuse wire in the cut-out. In other instances, the wire will be so decomposed and so thin that at a certain point it is as fine and sharp as an ordinary needle, and a slight vibration Figs. 1, 2 and 3.--Electrolysis. of the building will cause the wire to part and an arc to occur. 65. The foregoing proves the importance of properly fusing the circuits, and using only the best grade of materials. The best and most effective method of obviating the danger, is to use conduits, and high grade moisture-proof wires throughout, providing a separate tube for each wire, and excluding moisture at the joints, etc. CHAPTER XV. Adverse Wiring Conditions. 66. Where adverse conditions exists, such as moisture and gas, the best results have been obtained by stringing the wires, fastened to suitable insulators, on the face of the walls, etc. The insulators should be as few as possible. The fixtures and wires should be kept free from contact with the building. The cut-outs and switches should be located in a clean dry place, and to accomplish this, the length of the circuits must, if necessary, be increased. The fixture, if one is necessary, should consist of a metallic pipe, and the wiring of the fixture must be two heavily insulated wires. The end of the pipe toward the outlet should be closed by a cork, putty, or insulating compound. The socket and lamp should be enclosed in a...

Excerpt from Wiring of Finished Buildings: A Practical Treatise, Dealing With the Commercial and the Technical Phases of the Subject, for the Central-Station Man, Electrical Contractor and Wireman 1. Business Already Obtained. It is difficult if not impossible to secure authoritative figures relating to this matter. Probably the best data that have thus far been compiled are those contained in the 1914 Report of the Committee on Wiring Existing Buildings of the National Electric Light Association. The values therein given are undoubtedly accurate. They are reproduced in Table 6 and show that, in different sections of the country, the number of central-station customers ranges from 20 to 200 per 1000 population. However, as indicated by the table, in most of the cities there are at present somewhere around but 50 or 60 customers per 1000 population. Furthermore, the data were furnished by a "selected list of reporters only" and may or may not be representative of the entire country. The names of the cities referred to in the table have been concealed by the committee. It is altogether probable that, in cities and towns over the entire United States, the number of customers per 1000 population is considerably below 50. In Strassburg, Germany, and in Milan, Italy, the development has already reached a value well over 150 customers per 1000 population. la. Percentage of Houses, in Cities of 20,000 Population and Under, Wired for Electricity. From returns made to the Electrical World by central stations in all sections of the country, the number of houses in cities of 20,000 and less inhabitants which are equipped to use electricity varies with the localities.
