One of humankind's most significant technical achievements was the moon landing from the sixties. But what has NASA been up to lately, you might ask. Well, for the past twenty years, NASA has been quietly building the James Webb Space Telescope. The technical challenges are unrivaled, even by the incredible moon landing, some fifty years ago. When the "Origami Telescope" unfolds in October 2021, taking on the dimensions of a tennis court, it will be 100 times more powerful than the legendary Hubble Space Telescope. Moreover, it's a "time machine," so sophisticated that we can look at the delicate signatures of the past, some 14 billion years ago! This fantastic tool is a product of the skillful hands and ingenious minds of over 2000 talented engineers, scientists, and technicians. Humankind will soon see the universe as never before. This book recounts the actual work out in the shop. Maynard, as the leader in the optical shop, describes the processing details surrounding JWST Optical Fabrication. What is optical fabrication? You might ask. Optical fabrication is the grinding and polishing steps used to create the telescope's mirrors. All large observatory telescopes use reflective mirror surfaces to manipulate the faint light from the Cosmos. JWST is no different. The specifics, however, are unique for this observatory. Often the details of creating some of the world's most intriguing inventions are lost to the ages. Consider the Egyptian pyramids or even the more recent Hubble Space Telescope. We may know about the science that Hubble has supported, but if you look for the construction details, good luck! We have the specifics for the JWST mirror making chronicled here. It is improbable that you are an optical fabricator, or even less likely, a large mirror maker. This book is for the curious, the engineers, the scientists, and the nerds. It is a behind-the-scenes look into the very specialized creation of off-axis aspheric surfaces in lightweighted Beryllium substrates. Sorry, did your eyes cross? Okay, if you're still reading this, enjoy! Maynard

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned for operation in about five years, will have the capability to investigate – and answer – some of the most challenging questions in astronomy. Although motivated and designed to study the very early Universe, the performance of the observatory’s instruments over a very wide wavelength range will allow the world’s scientific community unequaled ability to study cosmic phenomena as diverse as small bodies in the Solar System and the formation of galaxies. As part of preparation to use JWST, a conference was held in Tucson, Arizona in 2007 that brought together astronomers from around the world to discuss the mission, other major facilities that will operate in the coming decade, and major scientific goals for them. This book is a compilation of those presentations by some of the leading researchers from all branches of astronomy. This book also includes a “pre-history” of JWST, describing the lengthy process and some of the key individuals that initiated early work on the concepts that would evolve to become the premier space observatory of the next decade.

From September 2007 to June 2008 the Space Studies Board conducted an international public seminar series, with each monthly talk highlighting a different topic in space and Earth science. The principal lectures from the series are compiled in Forging the Future of Space Science. The topics of these events covered the full spectrum of space and Earth science research, from global climate change, to the cosmic origins of life, to the exploration of the Moon and Mars, to the scientific research required to support human spaceflight. The prevailing messages throughout the seminar series as demonstrated by the lectures in this book are how much we have accomplished over the past 50 years, how profound are our discoveries, how much contributions from the space program affect our daily lives, and yet how much remains to be done. The age of discovery in space and Earth science is just beginning. Opportunities abound that will forever alter our destiny.

Ultraviolet Astronomy and the Quest for the Origin of Life addresses the use of astronomical observations in the ultraviolet range to better understand the generation of complex, life-precursor molecules. The origin of RNA is still under debate but seems to be related to the generation of pools of complex organic molecules submitted to heavy cycles of solution in water and drying. This book investigates whether these cycles require a planetary surface or may occur in space by examining both the theoretical and observational aspects of the role of UV radiation in the origin of life. This book offers the latest advances in these studies for astronomers, astrobiologists and planetary scientists. Addresses both the theoretical and observational aspects of the role of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the origin of life Builds on the requirements to produce prebiotic molecules in space and the implications for the origin of RNA Investigates the use of ultraviolet observations related to planetary system formation, the evolution of young planetary disks, and the interaction of stars with planetary atmospheres

'This witty book reveals the humbling vastness of our ignorance about the universe, along with charming insights into what we actually do understand' Carlo Rovelli, author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and Reality Is Not What It Seems In our small corner of the universe, we know how some matter behaves most of the time and what even less of it looks like, and we have some good guesses about where it all came from. But we really have no clue what's going on. In fact, we don't know what about 95% of the universe is made of. So what happens when a cartoonist and a physicist walk into this strange, mostly unknown universe? Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson gleefully explore the biggest unknowns, why these things are still mysteries, and what a lot of smart people are doing to figure out the answers (or at least ask the right questions). While they're at it, they helpfully demystify many complicated things we do know about, from quarks and neutrinos to gravitational waves and exploding black holes. With equal doses of humour and delight, they invite us to see the universe as a vast expanse of mostly uncharted territory that's still ours to explore. This is a book for fans of Brian Cox and What If. This highly entertaining highly illustrated book is perfect for anyone who's curious about all the great mysteries physicists are going to solve next.

Emotions are building in the hearts of every astronomer as mankind takes two enormous steps into the future of astronomy and another step into past galaxies hundreds of millions of years after the beginning of the universe, or the "Big Bang" to some. What information concerning the possibility of additional life forms will the James Webb Space Telescope provide?Remote galaxies Exoplanetse.g., black holes.: D The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) unveiled its first photographs to the world on July 12, 2022, and since then, nothing has been the same. This book is intended to inform every astronomer, stargazer, and lover of constellations about the Novel telescope in space and how it will affect (if not change) how we view the universe going forward. Different questions have been raised regarding how far we can go with this improvement on the Hubble telescope.Joseph L. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has operated continuously since 1990. During that time, four space shuttle-based service missions were launched, three of which added major observational capabilities. A fifth â€" SM-4 â€" was intended to replace key telescope systems and install two new instruments. The loss of the space shuttle Columbia, however, resulted in a decision by NASA not to pursue the SM-4 mission leading to a likely end of Hubble's useful life in 2007-2008. This situation resulted in an unprecedented outcry from scientists and the public. As a result, NASA began to explore and develop a robotic servicing mission; and Congress directed NASA to request a study from the National Research Council (NRC) of the robotic and shuttle servicing options for extending the life of Hubble. This report presents an assessment of those two options. It provides an examination of the contributions made by Hubble and those likely as the result of a servicing mission, and a comparative analysis of the potential risk of the two options for servicing Hubble. The study concludes that the Shuttle option would be the most effective one for prolonging Hubble's productive life.

Several major breakthroughs have helped contribute to the emerging field of astrobiology. Focusing on these developments, this fascinating book explores some of the most important problems in this field. It examines how planetary systems formed, and how water and the biomolecules necessary for life were produced. It then focuses on how life may have originated and evolved on Earth. Building on these two themes, the final section takes the reader on a search for life elsewhere in the Solar System. It presents the latest results of missions to Mars and Titan, and explores the possibilities of life in the ice-covered ocean of Europa. This interdisciplinary book is an enjoyable overview of this exciting field for students and researchers in astrophysics, planetary science, geosciences, biochemistry, and evolutionary biology.
