During the Glorious Revolution of 1688 Huguenot soldiers were at the forefront of William of Orange's army. Their role was an important one and they are, with justification, best remembered for this act among British historians and the public alike. Yet Huguenot soldiering existed long before this event, and French Protestants and their descendants featured prominently in European armies long afterwards. This volume is the first attempt to bring together in a scholarly study essays treating the Huguenots as soldiers in Europe and globally. Their story is often fascinating and sometimes poignant as they aided international Protestantism against Catholic foes across Europe and in the New World, while remaining 'under the cross' in their homeland of France. The book is divided into three sections, the first analysing the period prior to the 1685 Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which sealed their fate in France. Their role as mercenaries and freedom fighters receives attention, as does the complex political motivation that underscored their involvements abroad in the pre-Revocation era. Chapters examine the Huguenot rationale for foreign service and the dynamics of the Protestant international of which they were such a prominent part. Their role in European armies after that date is covered in the second section of the volume with a number of expert studies of Huguenot refugees in the armies of Britain, the Netherlands and Russia. A third section treats the Huguenot legacy, focusing on the aging generation of refugees and their descendants' contributions to the countries of their adoption. This book contains studies of the Huguenots serving in armies in various countries, and examines the lives and actions of a number of individual French refugee commanders who led armies consisting of their compatriots. By combining biographical studies of eminent figures with broader considerations of group experience, the volume presents a wide-ranging and thought provoking collection of material, making this the first study of its kind to consistently treat the military contribution made by the Huguenots to Europe at the high point of their importance as a historical group.

L'analisi condotta nel presente saggio (di tipo essenzialmente semasiologico) ha cercato di porre in evidenza come il testo vada ad inserirsi all'interno di un pi� generale interesse verso le vicende degli Ugonotti francesi, questi ultimi considerati rappresentativi - "ante litteram" - di quegli ideali di uguaglianza e di libert� che poi sarebbero stati anche il motore di certa parte democratica dell'intellettualit� risorgimentale italiana. Quella dei democratici, che dovettero soccombere di fronte alle istanze moderate di tipo cavouriano, fu una fazione sicuramente perdente, ma di certo non priva di spessore culturale e di impatto sociale, almeno a giudicare dalla pletora di drammi e di tragedie che seppe produrre a testimonianza dei propri ideali. Tale analisi � preceduta dalla disamina di alcuni drammi che presentarono al pubblico tematiche similari, per tentare di individuare una radice comune a cui anche l'ultimo autore esaminato, Gaetano Gattinelli, avrebbe poi fatto riferimento.

Als "innerweltliche Askese" beschrieb Max Weber die reformierte Religion und Lebensführung. Für deutsche und "frankophone" Texte (Lehrbücher, Essays, Periodika, Reden/Rededramen, philosophische Romane) des ausgehenden 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt diese vergleichende, literatur- und denkgeschichtliche Untersuchung, daß die Beschreibung Webers zwar zutrifft, aber zu kurz greift: Wenn reformierte Gelehrte wie der Naturrechtler Jean Barbeyrac, der Prediger-Philosoph Jean Henri Samuel Formey, der Mathematiker Jean Pierre de Crousaz und der Mediziner-Dichter Albrecht von Haller "rationalen" Morallehren (Hugo Grotius, Samuel Pufendorf, Christian Wolff) zuneigten, dann bestand ihre Leistung darin, diese "empirisch" zu prüfen, die "Bedrohung" durch die Skepsis abzuwehren und das Ergebnis in "angenehmer Form" zu verbreiten. Sie pflegten den Austausch mit Gelehrten unterschiedlicher Herkunft und Anschauung, traten für Toleranz und für die Vereinigung der protestantischen Kirchen ein. Deutsche Autoren wie Johann Christoph und Luise Adelgunde Victoria Gottsched teilten ihre Anliegen und folgten dem französisch-reformierten Vorbild. Christoph Martin Wieland aber kritisierte die "rationalen" Morallehren im philosophischen Roman - um sie als eine Denkmöglichkeit zu erhalten. Denn die "empirische" und gemäßigte Aufklärung betrachtete sich bereits als durch radikale Philosophien gefährdet. In der Literatur suchte sie eine Zuflucht.

Für die Historiographie der Habsburgermonarchie stellt die systematische Erforschung des Themenkomplexes "Deportation" völliges Neuland dar. Während die Zeitgeschichte Deportationspraktiken so behandelt, als wären sie ausschließlich eine Begleiterscheinung der totalitären Systeme des 20. Jahrhunderts, ergibt die Rekonstruktion ihrer "Frühgeschichte" ein vollkommen anderes Bild: als Instrument der Bestrafung, der Machtdemonstration und der Bevölkerungspolitik wurden sie im Habsburgerreich bereits im 18. Jahrhundert weitreichend und mit erschreckender "Modernität" angewandt. Anhand von acht Fallbeispielen entsteht eine Gesamtgeschichte, die auch den europäischen Rahmen einbezieht und einen unverzichtbaren Baustein zu einer Gewaltgeschichte der Habsburgermonarchie darstellt.
