Hugo von St. Viktor trägt seinen umfangreichen Stoff aus vielfältigen Quellen zusammen, vom griechischen Philosophen Platon über römische antike und spätantike Schriftsteller und Kirchenväter bis zu frühmittelalterlichen Autoren wie Johannes Scottus Eriugena. Am ausgiebigsten benutzt er Boethius, den er auch namentlich zitiert, Isidor von Sevilla und die Bibelkommentare des Hieronymus.
