Huir del Laberinto ofrece una mirada alternativa al conflicto de Irlanda del Norte a través del reflejo que del mismo hacen cuatro novelas contemporáneas. Esa aproximación literaria permite ir más allá de la realidad incompleta que dejan entrever los titulares periodísticos y descubrir los entramados que han tejido y avivado el conflicto. Esa mirada parte además de unos protagonistas infantiles, que brindan una perspectiva insólita de la sociedad norirlandesa. El libro repasa los temas principales que han dominado la literatura surgida de la isla: la configuración de la propia identidad, tanto a nivel individual como nacional; el vínculo entre el individuo y la tierra, analizando las consecuencias que provocan tanto el desarraigo como la claustrofóbica territorialidad que impera en el Norte; la obsesiva presencia de la historia en la vida diaria; el uso de la religión como emblema político; o el papel de la mujer en una sociedad en conflicto. Aunque el libro se centra especialmente en el estudio de esa visión literaria, también ofrece un análisis de la sociedad de Irlanda del Norte durante la época de los Disturbios. En ese sentido, las novelas escogidas poseen un valor antropológico y resultan un medio excepcional a través del cual comprender como se engendran las contiendas políticas y como el ser humano reacciona y se comporta cuando se ve envuelto en ellas.

This collection of critical essays addresses literary discourses on the mobility of women writers in various Atlantic regions of Europe. These literary systems (Ireland, Galicia, and Wales) experienced a rebirth in the second half of the twentieth century through their respective modern cultural artefacts, and the first decades of the present century have seen new research exploring emergent literatures in Europe, new European identities on the move, and even the dialogue between the various cultures of the Atlantic archipelago. This book centres on women writers and how they deal in their work with the issue of mobility. Authors and critics have tended to analyse travel by focusing on the transgression of patriarchal models of Western societies by white, middle-class women, these previously being mainly restricted to the private sphere, as well as on postcolonial issues with ethno- and Euro-centric slants. Notions of the construction of otherness are at stake here, in that even white women may be considered as belonging to a different ethnic group when they are migrants, thus showing how vulnerable and dependent women can be when isolated in a different environment. The narrative of history as progress may also be challenged in the twenty-first century by visions of nomadic women at risk of being displaced, both in their homeland and abroad.

It is no accident that some variation of the question 'What should I do?' appears in over three-quarters of the comedic plays of the Spanish Golden Age. Casuistical dialogue was a concern, even an obsession, of Spanish playwrights during the seventeenth century, many of whom were educated by Jesuit casuists. Conscience on Stage is a study of casuistry or case morality as the foundation for a poetics of seventeenth-century Spanish >em>comedias. Hilaire Kallendorf examines the Jesuit upbringing and casuistical education of major playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age, many of whom were also priests, and introduces the vocabulary of casuistry, as expressed in both confessors' manuals and in stage plays. Engaging issues of class, gender, and age to explore scenes of advice-giving and receiving, she demonstrates how the culture-specific construct of 'conscience' in early modern Spain can be recovered by means of a Foucauldian genealogy, which enlists the skills of philology at the service of a larger vision of the history of ideas. This study outlines and reiterates the relationship of theatre to casuistry, the Jesuit contributions to Spanish literary theory and practice, and the importance of casuistry for the study of early modern subjectivity.

En 1987, la editorial Actes Sud publicó una rara novela de Nivaria Tejera. Su título, misterioso como pocos, era Fuir la spirale (Huir de la espiral) y aparecía, vertida al francés por Jean Marie Saint Lu, un año después de la primera reedición de Le Ravin (1958; El barranco, 1989), también en Actes Sud y en traducción de Claude Couffon […] En la contraportada, estas palabras del legendario editor Hubert Nyssen: “Esto no es una novela, ni un poema, ni una epopeya, ni tampoco un relato. Una obra difícil, hermética, enigmática. Y aterradora para quienes no soportan la insurrección del lenguaje. Para los otros, en revancha, de pronto, qué deslumbramiento”. No se equivocaba el siempre lúcido Nyssen: Fuir la spirale (Huir de la espiral) era un relato misterioso, donde se hablaba de “visiones giratorias”, de “noches uniformantes”, de “opacidades de abandono”, de “rotaciones laberínticas”, de “precipicios crepusculares”, de “delirios autónomos” y de “fantasmas incandescentes”. Todas, expresiones enigmáticas que, para colmo, aparecían dentro del discurso alucinado y, por momentos, angustiosamente lógicos, del personaje central: Claudio Tiresias Blecher […] Nivaria Tejera, formula, así, la metáfora del destierro como sendero fugitivo, como espiral en ascenso, que desemboca en la huida final de toda escritura. La transcripción de esa epopeya interior es la única salida del laberinto: el único modo de alcanzar la libertad en la errancia. RAFAEL ROJAS (Prólogo) Nirvaria Tejera Montejo(Cuba, 1929), poeta, ensayista y novelista, siempre transida de poesía su escritura, pertenece a la generación cubana del Cincuenta, donde sobresale entre Severo Sarduy, Guillermo Cabrera Infante y Heberto Padilla. Ha conocido el exilio de las dictaduras de Batista y del régimen castrista. Ha publicado cerca de una decena de libros de poesía y cuatro textos de narrativa: su obra canaria El barranco (1958, 1989) y la trilogía cubana Sonámbulo del sol (Premio Biblioteca Breve, 1971), Fuir la spirale (1987) y Espero la noche para soñarte, Revolución (1987, 2002). Esta es la primera edición español de Huir de la espiral.
