Mamie Smith's 1920 recording of ""Crazy Blues"" is commonly thought to signify the beginning of commercial attention to blues music and culture, but by that year more than 450 other blues titles had already appeared in sheet music and on recordings. In this examination of early popular blues, Peter C. Muir traces the genre's early history and the highly creative interplay between folk and popular forms, focusing especially on the roles W. C. Handy played in both blues music and the music business. Long Lost Blues exposes for the first time the full scope and importance of early popular blues to mainstream American culture in the early twentieth century. Closely analyzing sheet music and other print sources that have previously gone unexamined, Muir revises our understanding of the evolution and sociology of blues at its inception.

"This quirky, brilliant book gives the reader the thrill of cultural history done well. Okihiro undertakes a conventional topic in a jarring way, avoiding the assumption of set boundaries of nations and human societies."—Henry Yu, author of Thinking Orientals: Migration, Contact, and Exoticism in Modern America "This beautifully written book integrates the history of Hawai'i into that of the U.S. better than any other I have ever read." —Patricia Seed, author of American Pentimento: The Invention of Indians and the Pursuit of Riches

Imperial Blues written by Fiona I. B. Ngô and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-21 with History categories.

In this pathbreaking study, Fiona I. B. Ngô examines how geographies of U.S. empire were perceived and enacted during the 1920s and 1930s. Focusing on New York during the height of the Harlem Renaissance, Ngô traces the city's multiple circuits of jazz music and culture. In considering this cosmopolitan milieu, where immigrants from the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Japan, and China crossed paths with blacks and white "slummers" in dancehalls and speakeasies, she investigates imperialism's profound impact on racial, gendered, and sexual formations. As nightclubs overflowed with the sights and sounds of distant continents, tropical islands, and exotic bodies, tropes of empire provided both artistic possibilities and policing rationales. These renderings naturalized empire and justified expansion, while establishing transnational modes of social control within and outside the imperial city. Ultimately, Ngô argues that domestic structures of race and sex during the 1920s and 1930s cannot be understood apart from the imperial ambitions of the United States.

Contained here are precise transcriptions and playing hints of classic tunes like 'Hula Girl' and 'Kaala', by the greatest players like Sol Hoopii, the Genial Hawaiians, and many others. Together with the accompanying CD, this book is a great tool for learning this exquisite slide guitar style. Easy to use by both acoustic, resonator and electric slide players. A whole chapter of Hawaiian turnarounds is an added bonus. Most of the tunes are in major tuning but there are several in B minor and C6.
