True stories of an English fishing community and its families, from street games and superstitions to the dangers of shipwrecks and war—includes photos. Survivors of a wrecked trawler stagger ashore in Iceland during the bitter winter of 1910 in a hair-raising tale based upon Skipper Brewer’s handwritten log. Another skipper, “Mad” Rilatt, outwits German U-boats in the First World War. A suicide mission to war-torn Norway is undertaken in 1940 aboard a former Hull trawler. Amy Johnston, who flew to Australia single-handed, is revealed as a Hessle Road girl. And “Cowboys of the Arctic Circle” shows how Hollywood influenced the young trawler lads. The fishing community of Hessle Road in Hull represents a unique breed of people who endured hardship from the elements in times of peace—and danger from the enemy in times of war. Within the world of the fishing families of Hull is a whole universe of humanity. Based upon interviews and three decades of research, a range of colorful tales are presented in Hull’s Fishing Heritage.

The role of Hull as the nation's biggest fishing port began in the mid-nineteenth century, the foundations being laid by the smacksmen of Brixham and Ramsgate. The arrival of steam pushed the boundaries out beyond the North Sea, and after 1936 Hull was committed to distant water and fishing. Steam cutters were in use by the 1870s but the successful conversion of steam paddle tugs for fishing marked the beginning of a revolution in North Sea fishing. Within twenty years the sailing smack had vanished from Hull; steam power meant that trawling was no longer dependent on the wind and fishing could take place beyond the confines of the North Sea. This book a unique pictorial history of Hull's fishing industry and its community; from the role of the trawlers during the two world wars to the amalgamations of the 1960s and 70s, the infamous Cod Wars and the massive reduction of the fleet after 1975. Despite the dark clouds, there has been good news, and October 2001 saw the opening of the new 4.5 million Hull fish market, Fishgate, a new chapter in Hull's fishing heritage.

Exploring the relationship between identity and religion in British Fishing Communities during the 19th and early 20th centuries, this volume focuses on three communities in the UK: Scarborough, Filey and Grimsby. The study offers a brief overview of the development of these communities and outlines the nature of the relationship between institutionalised and popular religion. It explores religion as a range of discourses or narratives that provide us with a way of viewing this matrix of meaning that has had a significant influence on the construction and maintenance of identity. It also examines the role of ritual and performance, both of which have been shown to play an important part in the daily lives of community members, not least in helping to provide and reinforce a sense of security, stability and belonging.

This book analyses case studies of heritage-rich cities that hosted mega-events to discuss emerging challenges, controversies, and accomplishments. The future of mega-events has never been more uncertain. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has introduced an unparalleled level of doubt regarding the kind of mega-events that will take place in the coming years. This book arrives at a quite unique moment of reflection. Prior to 2020, cities were already questioning the traditional format of mega-events (e.g. Olympics and Expo) while other cultural mega-events have been spreading and gaining popularity, thanks in part to typically lower costs of infrastructures and venues, far more adaptable arrangements, spatial distribution and time frame for hosting. In these ways, they have already been demonstrating higher flexibility in which to respond to future health and safety constraints. When it comes to the relation to the existing city, cultural mega-events have been planned, implemented, and studied far more than any other. By leveraging the richness of cultural mega-events, this multidisciplinary collection deepens the intersection between events and cultural heritage. The chapters in this book provide a new theoretical framework, critical questions, and relevant case studies to argue that the nexus between mega-events and heritage is a key challenge for many cities in Europe and beyond. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of European Planning Studies.

For centuries Britain's commercial fishermen have ventured out into the ravages of the surrounding seas to bring fish back both to supply a home market and for export around the world. Fishing is one of history's most dangerous jobs, and when disasters occur they can affect whole communities: in 1872 some 129 men were lost in one night alone. Fishermen have lost their lives because of extreme weather, fishing gear entanglement, lack of emergency support and often simply by falling overboard. Today, commercial fishing remains one of the most perilous occupations and still claims the lives of fishermen each year, leaving their families behind. The Perilous Catch is a well-researched, comprehensive and poignant history of the fishing industry written by maritime historian Mike Smylie.

Wherever you fit into the debate about food - vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, or carnivore - you cannot argue against the fact that fish have influenced our diet for millennia, and, for many, continue to do so today. We are, after all, an island nation surrounded by seas that were once extremely rich and diverse in its variety of both fish and shellfish, and it’s well known that early man was as much a hunter-gatherer on water as on land for fish are a great supplier of protein. Yet only in the last couple of centuries has fishing become an established occupation, and the last forty years has seen a multitude of change in what is now an industry. Outside the industry, little has been written about how this seafood is caught, landed and then reaches us, the consumer. We all know about fish and chip shops, but do we know the difference between a beam and otter trawl? What is the difference between a lobster pot and a lobster creel? Did you know oysters and salmon were once caught in such huge amounts they were regarded as poor man’s food? We all like ambling around colorful fishing harbors gazing at the boats, but just how much do we know about those that go out in such a dangerous environment and bring back the catch? With fish much talked about in today’s news, alongside the unhealthy state of the oceans, here we have the definitive guide to Britain’s commercial fisheries.

For 250 years encrusted wonders have been turning up in fishermen's nets: everything imaginable from prehistoric animal bones to priceless Roman statues. Fishing trawlers annually sweep an area equivalent in size to half the world's continental shelves. Everything in the wake of these bulldozers of the deep is battered. A devastating trail of smashed shipwrecks runs from the North Sea to Malaysia. The profound threat of the global fishing industry remains a black hole in marine archaeology, poorly understood and unmanaged. Fishing and Shipwreck Heritage is the first global analysis of the threat of bottom fishing to underwater cultural heritage, examining the diversity, scale and implications on endangered finds and sites. Throughout, the key questions of whether it is too late to save the planet's three million wrecks and how sustainable management is achievable are debated.
