Excerpt from Human and Bovine Tuberculosis I have quoted these experiments at length for the reason that they seem Often to be overlooked, and for the further reason that they have recently been directly misquoted. Koch said in his address before the British Con gress on Tuberculosis, If one studies the older literature of the subject, and collects the reports of the numerous experiments that were made in former times by Chauveau, Gunther and Harms, Bollinger and others, who fed calves, swine and goats with the milk and pieces of the lungs Of tuber cular cattle, we find these always fell ill Of tuberculosis, whereas those that received human material with their food did not. Bollinger in 1879 inoculated a young calf in the peritoneal cavity with material from a human lung. When killed after seven months the mesentery and peritoneal covering of the spleen presented a number of tumors from the size of a pea to that of a walnut and which microscopically were identical with those found in pearly disease under natural conditions. The retro peritoneal and mesenteric glands were tuberculous also. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Association of Human and Bovine Tuberculosis The following pages are devoted to the republication of some old papers presented to the medical profession during the past ten years. The reprint from the medical journals, from 5,000 to 7,000 of each, have been exhausted (as they were given away). Requests for some of the articles are still coming in; hence, the reproduction in book form. There is no claim that these magazine essays are of sufficient importance to be preserved in a bound volume; but as the subject-matter is one that is now attracting, as it deserves, an increased public attention, it may be that some of the arguments and alleged facts here presented may be deemed worthy of controversy, and thus lead to the truth, which has been one of the desires of the author. Excerpt from Bovine Tuberculosis All species of domestic animals are susceptible to tuberculosis but the disease is more prevalent in cattle, hogs and poultry than in other farm animals. Tuberculosis is readily transmitted from one individual to another of the same species by direct or indirect contact. On the other hand, transmission between species varies because of the existence of three more or less distinct types of tubercle bacilli, the human, the bovine and the avian. In general, tuberculosis found in cattle is induced by the bovine tubercle bacillus. However, local, non-progressive lesions have been produced experimentally in cattle by the human type, and rare cases of small, limited lesions due to natural infection with this type have been found also in this species. Cases of uterine infection of cattle with avian tuberculosis have been reported in Denmark. Tuberculosis in poultry has been found' to be caused by the avian type of tubercle bacillus in 100 percent of all cases studied. Hogs contract tuberculosis easily when fed on infected milk or when run ning in fields with tuberculous cattle or poultry. The disease induced in swine by the bovine bacillus is often fatal, but infection with the avian bacillus very seldom becomes progressive in swine, the lesions being limited usually to the lymph nodes of the head and neck. Excerpt from Experiments Concerning Tuberculosis Before discussing the general features of the experiments it Should be stated that all the cultures used were isolated from guinea pigs which had been inoculated with material from the various cases of human and bovine tuberculosis. AS a rule, the cultures were obtained from the spleens of guinea pigs and grown on the egg medium, which is described in detail on page 9 of Part I of this bulletin. In the comparative inoculations the cultures were approximately of the same age and the doses given as nearly uniform as possible. Excerpt from The Shattuck Lecture: The Past, Present and Future of Tuberculosis I. As already stated, it is in prophylaxis especially that we have gained by Koch's discovery. A few words must therefore be said on the mode of infection. The seed is the bacillus of tuberculosis; it is virtually omnipresent in civilized and settled communities; it succumbs readily to sunshine. How long it may retain its vitality in houses, fabrics, etc., we do not know, perhaps not as long as is often and by many believed. Theobald Smith tells me he cannot keep a culture alive more than three months even under conditions most favorable to the longevity of the organism. To his published work and ready kindness in imparting his knowledge I may here express my indebted ness. We are all his debtors. The bacilli of human and bovine tuberculosis are separate organisms today even if they may have had long ago a common ancestor. The bo vine form occurs practically only in young children, is rare in them, and the risk of its communication from cattle to man is very small unless the udder is tubercnlar. Under no other condition can a sufficient number of bacilli gain entrance to the milk to prove harmful. The meat is safe as food. It is therefore irrational, unlimited funds not being at our disposal, to kill all cattle, otherwise well, which re act to tuberculin. Much less money intelligently spent in dairy inspection, enforcing cleanliness, detecting and elim inating emaciated and sick cows, will serve all necessary prophylactic purposes. Excerpt from The Animal Tuberculoses, and Their Relation to Human Tuberculosis Although all tuberculous lesions acknowledge the presence of the causal agent - the bacillus of Koch nothing is more variable than their appearance. Some times they take the form of rounded granulations, hardly as big as a millet-seed, invading all the organs. Some times they are great fluctuating masses, filled with yellow pus, which is thick, grumous, full of calcareous grains, and resembles mortar. Sometimes the pleura or peri toneum are covered with hard, glistening, grayish-red, rounded new growths, with more or less long pedicles, and generally heaped together in clusters of variable size, so as to form genuine polypi, which sometime attain considerable dimensions. Sometimes, again, the lesion consists of an opaque grayish or yellowish matter infil trating the tissues. Excerpt from Tuberculosis of Children: Its Diagnosis and Treatment BY the discovery of the tubercle bacillus and its toxin, tuberculin, the study of tuberculosis and its many complexities were greatly facili tated. But it was due to the efforts of Behr ing that the then unsatisfactory research work was concentrated upon a definite purpose, namely: the practical study and treatment of tuberculosis.
