The theme of the 1997 INTERACT conference, 'Discovering New Worlds ofHCI', signals major changes that are taking place with the expansion of new technologies into fresh areas of work and leisure throughout the world and new pervasive, powerful systems based on multimedia and the internet. HCI has a vital role to play in these new worlds, to ensure that people using the new technologies are empowered rather than subjugated to the technology that they increasingly have to use. In addition, outcomes from HCI research studies over the past 20 years are now finding their way into many organisations and helping to improve and enhance work practices. These factors have strongly influenced the INTERACT'97 Committee when creating the conference programme, with the result that, besides the more traditional HCI research and education focus found in previous INTERACT conferences, one strand of the 1997 conference has been devoted to industry and another to multimedia. The growth in the IFIP TCI3 committee itself reflects the expansion ofHCI into new worlds. Membership oflFIP TC13 has risen to now include representatives of 24 IFIP member country societies from many parts of the world. In 1997, IFIP TCl3 breaks new ground by holding its sixth INTERACT conference in the Asia-Pacific region. This is a significant departure from previous INTERACT conferences, that were all held in Europe, and is especially important for the Asia-Pacific region, as HCI expands beyond its traditional base.

The field of human-computer interaction is striving to provide the conceptual foundations for designing computer tools and the environment needed to perform increasingly more complex and specialized tasks. To achieve this goal, human computer interaction must rely on the meeting of specialized, expert minds. Each of the research projects presented in this book investigate some critical question on the path of progress in human-computer interaction. These projects would not have been feasible without the multidisciplinary of the research team or of the researchers themselves.

The design and use of computer technology pertaining to the interfaces between human users and computers are explored within the domain of human-computer interaction. The designing of technologies which allows humans to interact with computers in new ways is explored in this field. It also observes the ways in which humans interact with computers. Human-computer interaction is an amalgamation of a variety of fields such as behavioral sciences, design, media studies and computer science. Research within this field is further divided into various subfields. Some of these are augmented reality, user customization, social computing, embedded computation and brain-computer interfaces. The various sub-fields of human-computer interaction along with technological progress that have future implications are glanced at in this book. It will also provide interesting topics for research which interested readers can take up. This textbook is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.

A delightful, engaging, and comprehensive overview of interaction design Effective and engaging design is a critical component of any digital product, from virtual reality software to chatbots, smartphone apps, and more. In the newly updated sixth edition of Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction, a team of accomplished technology, design, and computing professors delivers an intuitive and instructive discussion of the principles underlying the design of effective interactive technologies. The authors discuss how to design and apply digital technologies in the real world, illustrated with numerous examples. The book explores the interdisciplinary foundations of interaction design, including skills from product design, computer science, human and social psychology, and others. The book builds on the highly successful fifth edition and draws on extensive new research and interviews with accomplished professionals and researchers in the field that reflect a rapidly-changing landscape. It is supported by a website hosting digital resources that add to and complement the material contained within. Readers will also find: Explorations of the social and emotional components of interacting with apps, digital devices and computers Descriptions about how to design, prototype, evaluate and construct technologies that support human-computer interaction Discussions of the cognitive aspects of interaction design, as well as design and evaluation, including usability testing and expert reviews. An essential text for undergraduate and graduate students of human-computer interaction, interaction design, software engineering, web design, and information studies, Interaction Design will also prove to be indispensable for interaction design and user experience professionals.
