This volume reviews mid-1980s research in the development of computer systems that employ advanced technology to meet the needs of an expanding user population, while remaining sensitive to human requirements. Contributions from researchers in such diverse areas as user interface technology through to controlled experimental evaluations of systems and human factors principles are included in this volume. Topics considered includes recommendations for dialogue design, views of organizations on human factors, graphical and multimedia human/computer interaction, perspectives for the future of interactive systems, and the design of languages for applications in teleconferencing, databases for videotex systems and office automation.

Based on an extensive literature survey, this document presents a description and critical analysis of the state of the art in the area of human factors in computer systems. This review is concerned both with the status of human factors research in the area of user computer interaction and with the current state of user-computer interaction technology and practices. The primary purpose of the review is to determine whether research and practice in this area have evolved sufficiently to support the development of a human factors guide to computer system design. It is concluded that insufficient data exist for the development of a 'quantitative reference handbook' in this area, but that a 'human factors design guide' -- which discusses issues, alternatives, and methods in the context of the design process -- is both feasible and needed. Fundamentals of Human-Computer Interaction aims to sensitize the systems designer to the problems faced by the user of an interactive system. The book grew out of a course entitled ""The User Interface: Human Factors for Computer-based Systems"" which has been run annually at the University of York since 1981. This course has been attended primarily by systems managers from the computer industry. The book is organized into three parts. Part One focuses on the user as processor of information with studies on visual perception; extracting information from printed and electronically presented text; and human memory. Part Two on the use of behavioral data includes studies on how and when to collect behavioral data; and statistical evaluation of behavioral data. Part Three deals with user interfaces. The chapters in this section cover topics such as work station design, user interface design, and speech communication. It is hoped that this book will be read by systems engineers and managers concerned with the design of interactive systems as well as graduate and undergraduate computer science students. The book is also suitable as a tutorial text for certain courses for students of Psychology and Ergonomics.

This monograph is on the theme of human factors for interactive systems. This area is emerging as a vital component of computer technology, and there are giant strides to be made in tailoring software to the human user. The first four chapters discuss issues in the design of interactive systems, by which we mean systems where the user and a computer engage in a dialogue. The last four chapters discuss the design of experiments. Validation of design principles requires testing, experimentation plays an increasingly important role in computer science.

Psychology Of System Design written by D. Meister and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-28 with Computers categories.

This is a book about systems, including: systems in which humans control machines; systems in which humans interact with humans and the machine component is relatively unimportant; systems which are heavily computerized and those that are not; and governmental, industrial, military and social systems. The book deals with both traditional systems like farming, fishing and the military, and with systems just now tentatively emerging, like the expert and the interactive computer system. The emphasis is on the system concept and its implications for analysis, design and evaluation of these many different types of systems. The book attempts to make three major points: 1. System design, and particularly computer system design, must fit into and be directed by a comprehensive theory of system functioning. 2. Interactive computer design models itself upon our knowledge of how humans function. 3. Highly sophisticated interactive computer systems are presently mostly research vehicles, they are vastly different to general purpose, commercially available word processors and personal computers. The book represents an interdisciplinary approach, the author has used psychological, organizational, human factors, and engineering sources. The book is not a "how to do it" book but it is intended to stimulate thinking about the larger context in which systems, particularly computer systems of the future, should be designed and used.
