Charles Horton Cooley's account of human beings, their behavior, and how they organize themselves has been praised for its originality, and remains an underappreciated and much-cited classic of sociology. Human Nature and the Social Order is a logically composed book which straddles and to a degree transcends the boundaries between philosophy, psychology and sociology. Cooley wished to clarify the behavior of human beings, how they come to interact and socialize with one another, and how they arrive at a definition of themselves that is in harmony with their own well-being and that of others. Later in the book, Cooley discusses qualities which have been promoted or felt as necessary for humans in civilized society. Good, conscientious and beneficent leadership, the possession of a moral compass and conscience, and the excellent values of freedom receive their own discussions with positive and negative elements comprising the well-rounded analyses.

Practical Symbolic Interactions in the Shrine of the South: Conversations with a Damn Yankee finds that Lexington-Rockbridge, VA, community sentiments toward Southern symbols such as the Confederate Battle Flag and Robert E. Lee are not necessarily reducible to a racial divide. John F. Cataldi uses data to demonstrate that most black and white respondents navigate a social balance between the extremes of conservation and progress as a way to productively coexist and unify as a community rather than maintain an insular posture or cause division based solely on symbolic ideology. These findings challenge conventional sociological and media-provided paradigms and broaden the discussion of what tolerance and situational context mean for a large spectrum of community members who live in the milieu of Confederate symbols every day.

Character Theology provides a natural, universal way for the world to engage God through his chosen cast of characters. As the media eras continue to change (oral to print to digital-virtual), too many Bible scholars, and consequently pastors and Bible teachers in the West and beyond, lack capability to effectively communicate Scripture to Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. These generations find little if any relevance in the Christianity promoted by those stuck in modernity’s sticky abstract systematic theology. Character Theology relates, sticks, and transforms these generations. Why? Because people grasp and engage God most naturally and precisely through his interaction with biblical characters and their interaction with each other! Characters communicate the Creator’s characteristics. The roadmap to the recovery and expansion of Christianity in the twenty-first century will be through Bible characters.

Psychology in Contemporary China focuses on the advancement of psychology in China and the different areas to which this field is applied. The book proceeds by outlining the evolution, nature, and characteristics of Chinese psychology. The text then points out that studies on this discipline is generally difficult, because of the lack of publication of resources in English. The process of learning this field is often done through visitations, with specialists going to China to conduct research and lectures. The text investigates the evolution of psychology in China, as well as its progress through education. The relationship of this discipline with political and social concerns is highlighted, and the progress of this field in universities in China is emphasized. The practice of psychology in China is somewhat limited. This lack is expressed by the fact that psychologists avoid questions that have political content. An examination of the attitudes of Chinese is also presented, and their views on individuality, self-criticism, violence, child-rearing, religion, and modernization are discussed. The book is of great importance for scholars and readers who research on the evolution, growth, and contributions of psychology to society.

Society And Personality written by Tamotsu Shibutani and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-29 with Psychology categories.

Being an "interactionist" approach to social psychology, Society and Personality deals with people, not as isolated individuals, but as participants in groups. The aim of the book is to help the reader develop an orderly perspective—a consistent point of view from which to see his (or her) own conduct and that of his (or her) fellows. Propositions about behavior seen from the viewpoint are presented, and relevant evidence, both descriptive and experimental, is examined and evaluated. The author draws upon the two great intellectual traditions of pragmatism and psychoanalysis, and attempts to integrate them into a single, consistent approach. All concepts are reduced to behavioristic terms—defined always in terms of what people do. In this way, it is possible to draw freely on these two schools, and at the same time, avoid much of the jargon of both. Other approaches to the study of human behavior are frequently mentioned and sometimes discussed, but the objective is to give the reader one perspective rather than confuse him with many. Of course, this standpoint is presented as only one of many possible ways of looking at people. Although the book's basic ideas are drawn from two main schools of psychological thought, relevant material has been gathered from other sources as well—sociology, ethnography, linguistics, experimental psychology, and clinical data from psychiatry. One very important extra feature is the List of Personal Documents, compiled by the author to guide interested readers to first-person accounts—biographies, diaries, clinical records—each of which provides a valuable record of human experience.

This book rethinks Marx's sociology as a form of realist social theory, extending Roy Bhaskar's philosophical realism into the social sciences. By constructing historical materialism as realist social theory, it becomes possible to resolve many long standing dilemmas in Marxist discourse, such as voluntarism versus determinism and humanism versus economism.
