Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 33 covers the Proceedings of the 1976 Laurentian Hormone Conference. The book discusses the expanding significance of hypothalamic peptides; the LATS in Graves' disease; and the ontogenesis of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid function and metabolism in human, sheep, and rat. The text also describes the antimullerian hormone; the evolution of gonadotropin structure and function; and the biosynthesis of parathyroid hormone. The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance investigations of hormone structure and function; the regulation of vasopressin function in health and disease; and some considerations of the role of the antidiuretic hormone in water homeostasis are also considered. The book further tackles the clinical significance of circulating proinsulin and C-peptide; glucagon and the A cells; and a newly recognized pancreatic polypeptide. The text then encompasses the steroid hormone actions in tissue culture cells and cell hybrids and their relation to human malignancies; and the role of hormones on digestive and urinary tract carcinogenesis. Endocrinologists, neuroendocrinologists, and oncologists will find the book invaluable.

"Anatomia clavus et clavis medicinae est." Anatomy is a fundamental science that studies the structure of the human body from ancient times. Over time, the discipline constantly expands with recent progress that has been produced in researching the human body. So, new methods of researching were incorporated in the anatomy development: plastic materials injections, plastination, computed techniques of sectional bodies, and embryology. Anatomic sections like macroscopic, mesoscopic, microscopic, and public anatomies; radiologic anatomy; computed anatomy; radiologic anatomies; and clinical anatomy contribute to realize a very complex discipline that represents the base of learning medicine.

For many years, laboratory dogs have served as important animal models for biomedical research that has advanced human health. Conducted at the request of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this report assesses whether laboratory dogs are or will continue to be necessary for biomedical research related to the VA's mission. The report concludes that using laboratory dogs in research at the VA is scientifically necessary for only a few areas of current biomedical research. The report recommends that the VA adopt an expanded set of criteria for determining when it is scientifically necessary to use laboratory dogs in VA biomedical research; that the VA promote the development and use of alternatives to laboratory dogs; and highlights opportunities for the VA to enhance the welfare of laboratory dogs that are being used in biomedical research areas for which they have been deemed necessary.

In the medical imaging field, clinicians and researchers are increasingly moving from the qualitative assessment of printed images to the quantitative evaluation of digital images since the quantitative techniques often improve diagnostic accuracy and complement clinical assessments by providing objective criteria. Despite this growing interest, the field lacks a comprehensive body of knowledge. Filling the need for a complete manual on these novel techniques, Quantifying Morphology and Physiology of the Human Body Using MRI presents a wide range of quantitative MRI techniques to study the morphology and physiology of the whole body, from the brain to musculoskeletal systems. Illustrating the growing importance of quantitative MRI, the book delivers an indispensable reference for readers who would like to explore in vivo MRI techniques to quantify changes in the morphology and physiology of tissues caused by various disease mechanisms. With internationally renowned experts sharing their insight on the latest developments, the book goes beyond conventional MRI contrast mechanisms to include new techniques that measure electromagnetic and mechanical properties of tissues. Each chapter offers comprehensive information on data acquisition, processing, and analysis techniques as well as clinical applications. The text organizes the techniques based on their primary use either in the brain or the body. Some of the techniques, such as diffusion-weighted imaging and diffusion tensor imaging, span several application areas, including brain imaging, cancer imaging, and musculoskeletal imaging. The book also covers up-and-coming quantitative techniques that explore tissue properties other than the presence of protons (or other MRI-observable nuclei) and their interactions with their environment. These novel techniques provide unique information about the electromagnetic and mechanical properties of tissues and introduce new frontiers of study into disease mechanisms.
