Young people enter adult life confronted with an endless confusion of ideas and beliefs, many of which have come down to us since primitive humans first walked on the earth. When some Greeks stopped believing in ideas from mythology and observed the world about them, they invented science and then philosophy. By the time of the Enlightenment, it was thought that further advances in science and philosophy would make it possible, if not at that time, then at some future date, to replace the beliefs of primitive humans and the very different beliefs of the scholastics in the Middle Ages with certain knowledge based on logic and mathematics. But the Romantic Age that followed destroyed that approach to understanding the universe. Societies in the West have since become semi-detached from their traditional beliefs and values as a consequence of the mingling of diverse cultures and their beliefs, together with advances in science. Science forges ahead but progress in philosophy since the Romantic Age has been slow and uncertain, and many today think that little further progress is possible. During the course of these discussions, it is shown that this conclusion is wrong and suggests why belief and reason, which are the only weapons of understanding available to us, have so easily led to error. The author examines the historical and religious background to these problems and suggests solutions based on current knowledge that are relevant to the welfare of individuals living in western societies today.

It projects some acceptable and non-acceptable values within society; and guides to the role of religion in each of these values. Human values are social and ethical norms common to all cultures and societies as well as religions. By helping social norms to be internalized, values are indirectly sources of relationship behaviour. Likewise, cultural traditions, religion and language have different meanings that shape beliefs and influence social life. Thus, it seems important to reevaluate the role of values in social life in a society which is extremely distinguishable in religious terms. They represent a melding of social progress, justice and spiritual growth. Practices are also time-bound, dictating how you should dress, what name you are to take, what you can eat, how many wives you may have, how a person should be punished if they make some mistake. In all traditions you find practices like these that were necessary at the time they were instituted, but they may no longer serve a good purpose today. In the Qur'an, it is prescribed that if someone steals, their hand must be cut off. At one time a Christian who wanted to be religious had to take a vow of poverty. Jains were not allowed to touch money (this dilemma was solved by having someone accompany them to carry their money for them). Jews could do no work on the Sabbath. Those who follow this rule today cannot turn on a light switch.

Milton Rokeach's book The Nature of Human Values (1973), and the Rokeach Value Survey, which the book served as the test manual for, occupied the final years of his career. In it, he posited that a relatively few "terminal human values" are the internal reference points that all people use to formulate attitudes and opinions, and that by measuring the "relative ranking" of these values one could predict a wide variety of behavior, including political affiliation and religious belief. This theory led to a series of experiments in which changes in values led to measurable changes in opinion for an entire small city in the state of Washington.
