Each of the 17 chapters of this book is an introduction to the life and beliefs of a great scientist, philosopher, poet or thinker who rejects faith in theistic concepts of religion developed by primitive people. They run from Voltaire, Thomas Paine and Robert Ingersoll, to Walt Whitman, Isaac Asimov and Carl Sagan. These thinkers expound on their views of the natural world and on what we can hope and believe based on the scientific method and discoveries. They fill us with overwhelming sense of wonder and awe by what they teach about how to view our wonderful world. They teach us to thrill to evolving life and to be at peace with ourselves despite the limits of our lives. Past President of the Humanist Association of Central Connecticut, Dr. David Schafer, said, "For several years, among the talks most consistently popular with our members have been those in Doug Peary?s long running series, ?Humanist Heroes.? One reason seems to be the emotional intensity Doug brings to his research on each of his subjects, an intensity that continues to reward him, and us, deeply with each of his subjects with each new biography he touches. These are not just interesting stories from and about the lives of Humanists--they are intimate glimpses of more meaningful insights into living, working, loving, and dying, profoundly inspirational for Doug and his audiences."

Dr. David Schafer, retired Yale professor, scientist, and co-founder and past president of the Humanist Association of Connecticut, said, "For several years, among the talks most consistently popular with our members have been those in Doug Peary's long-running series, "Humanist Heroes." We've talked to a number of people about the reason for this. One reason seems to be the emotional intensity Doug brings to his research on each of his subjects, an intensity that continues to reward him, and us, deeply with each of his subjects with each new biography he touches. These are not just interesting stories from and about the lives of Humanists; they are intimate glimpses of more meaningful insights into living, working, loving, and dying, profoundly inspirational for Doug and his audiences." Rev. Ann Fuller, in September 2011, in her church newsletter, recommended "Humanist Heroes" to her congregation. I thanked her. She responded "My pleasure. I also included it in the required reading for my class at the Humanist Institute for our opening session on Essential Humanism this past December. They really enjoyed the personal stories and thought it was a nice break from the drier philosophical works they had to read. Gave Humanism the human touch" Another Minister who does not want her name used said, "Douglas Peary in his book "Humanist Heroes" has written brief biographies of the lives of seventeen men, ranging from Voltaire and Thomas Paine in the eighteenth century to Steve Allen and Carl Sagan in the twentieth. His subjects include writers and poets, scientists and philosophers, ministers and lawyers, even a television personality! A wonderful aspect of the book is that Peary includes extended pieces of each person's own writings so the reader can get a better feel for each person. There isn't a way to summarize a book as rich in research and story and detail as Peary's. What I can do is suggest in a couple of ways how Peary's stories help bring religious humanism to life. There are many in our culture who assume that there can be no ethics without belief in a God- no foundation for acting morally without a supreme being, and/or no incentive to be moral without the promise of divine reward or punishment."

Every epoch has its artists, thinkers, and creators, and behind many of these people, there is a patron waiting in the wings. Patronage and Humanist Literature in the Age of the Jagiellons looks at the relationship between humanist scholars and their patrons in east central Europe during the early sixteenth century. It is the first study in English specifically to address literary patronage as it existed in this particular time and place. Drawing on the writings of three itinerant scholar-poets associated with the courts of Cracow, Buda, and Vienna, Jacqueline Glomski argues that, even while they supported the imperial pretensions of the Jagiellonian monarchs, the humanist scholars of east central Europe also created effective propaganda for themselves by representing their own role in the conferring of fame upon their patrons. Using a wide array of source material, from dedicatory letters to panegyric and political literature, Glomski describes how important patronage was to the scholar-poets, and analyzes the process by which conventions of Renaissance humanism spread across Europe. Patronage and Humanist Literature in the Age of the Jagiellons is an insightful historic account that is accessible to anyone interested in patronage at the time of the European Renaissance.

Speaking Of Ethics written by Joseph Chuman and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-20 with Philosophy categories.

As societies continue to grow and change, humans find themselves facing many important ethical questions. Is the pursuit of happiness a worthwhile goal? Should religion be immune to criticism? These questions and many others are addressed in Speaking of Ethics, a collection of the works of Dr. Joseph Chuman, highlighting his main ethical concerns. For the past forty-five years, Chuman has been serving as an Ethical Culture leader, inspiring his congregants through some of their toughest personal challenges. These experiences paired with his academic acumen, give him a fresh and astute perspective on ethics today. Chuman takes a broad-view approach that addresses the conditions that create dilemmas, rather than focusing on oversimplified right/wrong situations. Speaking of Ethics, with its conversational tone and accessible language, shares Chuman's thoughts in a way that provokes contemplation and discussion among its readers. The various sections of Speaking of Ethics give a stimulating glimpse at the foundations of Ethical Culture, as well as some of the biggest philosophical questions regarding private and public ethics. Readers will also learn about some of the top heroes of the Humanist world, from John Dewey and Ralph Waldo Emerson to the early feminists and Baruch Spinoza.
