"When the Ottoman Empire met its demise in the early twentieth century, the new republic closed down the Sufi orders, with the rationale that they were anti-modern. Yet the nascent nation, faced with defining its cultural heritage, soon began to emphasize the Turkish ethnicity of the Sufi saints, and, in the case of saints like Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, Hacı Bektaş Veli, and Yunus Emre, to focus on universalist themes found in their poetry and legends, such as love, peace, fellowship, and tolerance between ethnic and religious communities. With this reinterpretation of their legacies (part of a broader ideological shift toward secularism), these saints have now come to be considered the great Turkish humanists. Today their veneration plays a greater role in the nationalistic preservation of Turkish culture than in a remembered heritage of Islamic religion. Humanist Mystics is the first book to examine Islam and secularism within Turkish nationalist ideology through the lens of the commemorated saints. Soileau surveys the Anatolian and Turkish religious and political history as context for his closer attention to the lives and influence of the three Sufi saints. They revived Scriptural, medieval, and early Renaissance notions of secrecy in their spiritual and profane literature to advance the reforms in church and society that they advocated. Erasmus, Briçonnet, and Marguerite expanded on Origenian, Augustinian, and pseudo-Dionysian concepts of divine mystery, as being secret, throughout their works. By developing the idea that the divine remains both transcendent and immanent in the world of creation, these humanists explored, through literature, how the human spirit can either accede, or fail to accede, to the secrets of Christian wisdom.

In September of 1976 a group of some fifty scholars and practising mystics gathered at the University of Calgary. The chief objective of the Conference was to ponder and assess the nature of mysticism in its Eastern, Western and North American Indian forms. The method the Conference followed was somewhat unusual in that it aimed at a dialogue between the practising mystics and the scholars. What this book presents to the reader is not the outcome of the dialogue, but the personal statements and papers from which the dialogue began. Of course there is a degree to which the dialogue is already present, in that the papers of the scholars were written with the statements of the mystics in hand. Among some of the philosophers present, a set of more formal comments on each others presentations was recorded and these have been included.
