Technical communication has two aspects, the technical & the humanistic. Historically, the technical aspect has received more attention. In the past decade or so, however, the humanistic aspect has become more salient. This book is a collection of essays on the humanistic aspects of technical communication with introductory & critical commentary. These aspects are the rhetoric of science, social constructionism, feminist critiques of science & gender issues, & ethics. The humanistic side of technical communication counterbalances the technical side of objects, information & conventional forms. The first chapter deals with humanism as it relates to technical communication, followed by chapters on each of the four aspects. Each chapter includes an overview & critical comments followed by two reprinted essays. The reprinted essays outline important issues in & represent the tenor of developments in each area. Technical communication from this humanistic perspective is uniquely situated as the bridge between the sciences & the humanities. No other academic or professional field is so intrinsically involved in both cultures, & no other field holds as great a potential for integrating the two.
