“Esa persona es muy humana”. Cuando escuchamos esa breve frase, ¿qué es lo primero que se nos viene a la mente? – Ser humano no solamente significa que pertenecemos a una determinada especie, que tiene como características fisiológicas; el ser bípedo, con articulaciones superiores útiles, de pelaje escaso, etc. Si bien el principio biológico nos otorga la distinción entre lo que es y no es un ser humano, este solo delimita al individuo a partir de lo meramente físico, sin embargo, su humanidad también dice respecto a otras características que no necesariamente se circunscriben al Yo como objeto, o en las palabras de Sartre; al ‘Ser para sí’. Por ejemplo, el raciocinio abstracto, el sentimiento profundo, la capacidad de consolidar memorias y experiencias para construir y reconstruir el carácter, la percepción del futuro, la facultad de ser virtuoso, entre otros tantos atributos, permiten entrever la esencia del Yo como sujeto, como Idea, o sea, el ‘Ser en sí’. En ese sentido, el ‘Ser para sí’, que dice respecto a la existencia del individuo como objeto del mundo, de la representación, describe parcialmente su humanidad, dado que, para realmente reconocerlo como humano, se necesita contemplar tanto las características físicas como aquellas que dicen respecto al intelecto y la virtud (‘Ser en sí’). Mientras que el ‘Ser para sí’ lo hace agente partícipe del mundo, a través de las diversas sensaciones y percepciones, así como lo impulsa a la satisfacción de determinados deseos, el ‘Ser en sí’ le permite ir más allá de su objetividad, haciéndolo trascender por medio de su facultad de pensar y sentir. Por tanto, el reconocimiento de nuestra humanidad se da a partir de la comprensión de que somos seres existentes, con características fisiológicas únicas, no obstante, lo que nos hace verdaderamente humanos es la capacidad de reflexionar sobre nuestra esencia y existencia, orientando nuestros pensamientos, palabras y comportamientos a formas más sublimes y virtuosas de Ser, identificando los deseos y las pasiones que nos limitan, reconociendo los sufrimientos y adversidades que nos acongojan, y buscando, en todo momento, los mejores caminos para hacer frente a esta jornada desafiadora. Adicionalmente, y como ya argumenté en un obra anterior, el ‘Ser para sí’ no es más que consecuencia del ‘Ser en sí’, siendo que este último no se funde en la nada una vez que el cuerpo físico perece, sino que este trasciende a formas muchos más sutiles. En ese sentido, la esencia del Ser, como su propia humanidad, no se delimita en su existencia, ni mucho menos en las tenencias que este tiene durante en vida, sino más bien en la construcción de la razón y la virtud, único bagaje que lleva a la eternidad. Este libro, como continuación de mi serie sociológica, incentiva al lector a reflexionar sobre aspectos indispensables para el reconocimiento de su humanidad. A través de breves reflexiones, encontrará recomendaciones para tener una vida virtuosa y feliz, haciendo frente a sus miedos, inseguridades y sufrimientos, controlando sus impulsos y deseos superficiales y narcisistas y, principalmente, reconociendo su humanidad a través de sí y del otro, así como su capacidad de trascender más allá de la presente vida.

This edition of the Inter-American Yearbook on Human Rights, like the volumes that precede it, includes information concerning the activities of the Organization of American States in the promotion and protection of human rights. It begins with the composition of the Commission and Court, including the biographies of the members, 1988 activities of each body, reproductions of resolutions and reports by the Commission and historic correspondences and decisions by the Court. Also included is an update on the status of the American Convention on Human Rights, which reports the relation of each country to that instrument, followed by resolutions adopted in 1988 by the OAS General Assembly. The year 1988 distinguished itself particularly because the Inter-American Court of Human Rights made its first decision on a contentious case, the Velásquez Rodríguez case (Honduras). This historic decision is reproduced in Part Three of this volume. Another important 1988 development in the Inter-American system was the Protocol of San Salvador, or Additional Protocol to the American Convention on Human Rights for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, reproduced in Part Four. Also included, in its entirety, is a report on the human rights situation in Haiti, a report requested by the Organization of American States Permanent Council in Resolution 502.
