"So long as wit and satire, insightfully imagined characterization, and unmatched erudition matter in literature, Qian Zhongshu's writing will have a place, and this translation of his work is among the most significant renderings from Chinese."---Ron Egan, University of California, Santa Barbara Qian Zhongshu was one of twentieth-century China's most ingenious literary stylists, one whose insights into the ironies and travesties of modern China remain stunningly fresh. Between the early years of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) and the Communist takeover in 1949, Qian wrote a brilliant series of short stories, essays, and a comedic novel that continue to inspire generations of Chinese readers. With this long-awaited translation, English-language readers can immerse themselves in the invention and satirical wit of one of the world's great literary cosmopolitans. This collection brings together Qian's best short works, combining his iconoclastic essays on the "book of life" from written in the Margins of Life (1941) with the four masterful short stories of Human, Beast, Ghost (1946). His essays elucidate substantive issues through deceptively simple subjects---the significance of windows versus doors, for example, or the blind spots of literary critics---and assert the primacy of critical and creative independence. His stories blur the boundaries between humans, beasts, and ghosts as they struggle through life, death, and resurrection. Christopher G. Rea situates these works within China's wartime politics and Qian's literary vision, highlighting significant changes that Qian Zhongshu made to different editions of his writings and providing unprecedented insight into the author's creative process. Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998), hailed as twentieth-century China's "foremost man of letters,"is best known for his novel, Fortress Besieged, and his groundbreaking study of the Chinese literary canon, Limited Views: Essays on Ideas and Letters

The Beasts The Graves And The Ghosts written by Hann Tzuu Joey Tan and has been published by Langham Monographs this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-31 with Religion categories.

At the heart of the gospel is the message of the incarnation: God translating himself into the context of human culture and language so we might know him. Far from coming to an end with Christ’s life on earth, this process of contextualization is ongoing, reoccurring every time the gospel encounters the particularities of society and culture. In this book, Hann Tzuu Tan explores the significance of contextualized preaching within the Chinese context. Against the backdrop of three major festivals – the Spring Festival, the Qing Ming Festival, and the Hungry Ghost Festival – Tan examines the practices of six experienced Chinese preachers in order to demonstrate the theological and practical importance of contextualized preaching. As a result of his research, Tan suggests six main principles for contextual preaching – principles that are rooted within a Chinese context, yet applicable to anyone seeking to express the gospel’s relevance within a particular cultural setting. Combining insights from biblical studies, applied theology, and ethnography, this interdisciplinary study will enrich one’s understanding of Chinese culture, the gospel, and the important and necessary work of contextualization.

From the author of Death and the Maiden and other works that explore relations of power in the postcolonial world comes the story of a man whose distant past comes to haunt him. Is the sordid story behind human zoos that flourished in Europe in the nineteenth century connected somehow to a boy's life a hundred years later? On Fitzroy Foster's fourteenth birthday on September 11, 1981, he receives an unexpected and unwelcome gift: when his father snaps his picture with a Polaroid, another person's image appears in the photo. Fitzroy and his childhood sweetheart, Cam, set out on a decade-long journey in search of this stranger's identity—and to reinstate his own—across seas and continents, into the far past and the evil and good that glint in the eyes of the elusive visitor. Seamlessly weaving together fact and fiction, Darwin's Ghosts holds up a different light to Conrad's "The horror! The horror!" and a different kind of answer to the urgent questions, Who are we? And what can we do about it?

When Tess Livingston got off the bus at a roadside stop high in the Andes, she couldn't quite remember how she got there. She was an FBI agent, and the last thing she remembered was tracing a group of counterfeiters to Ecuador. Then she found herself at the Bodega del Cielo, waiting for the bus to Esperanza, or at least that's where her ticket says she's going. Ian Ritter, a journalist from Minneapolis, is also at the Bodega. He was planning a trip to the Galapagos Islands, but his limited Spanish isn't up to explaining why he needs to change to Bus 13 to Esperanza. Their meeting changed their lives forever. For the city of Esperanza is a place out of time, partly in the material world, and partly existing on another plane. There the spiritual world can manifest. The dead can come through ... and they do. A few of the dead are Chasers, beings of light who have deferred their passage to a higher plane in order to help and protect the living. But many of the dead are brujos, angry ghosts who cannot let go, who desire only to possess the bodies of the living so they can reclaim their own physical existence in the world. Brujos kill those they possess, sooner or later. Tess and Ian, and their families, have made a good life together in Esperanza, and have no desire to ever leave it. But now something unusual, even for Esperanza, is happening. Parts of the city seem to be leaving them.

It is to testify to a future existence for animals and to create a wider interest in it that I have undertaken to compile this book; and my object, I think, can best be achieved in my own way, the way of the investigator of haunted places. The mere fact that there are manifestations of "dead" people (pardon the paradox) proves some kind of life after death for human beings; and happily the same proof is available with regard a future life for animals; indeed there are as many animal phantasms as human--perhaps more; hence, if the human being lives again, so do his dumb friends.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to publications@publicdomain.org.uk This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via DMCA@publicdomain.org.uk
