Many years ago, I went looking for a Book of Jokes. There were none. Years later, I tried again-online, and everywhere else, and although I found many books about humor, containing humor, and written by famous people and comics, and even scholastic books analyzing humor-and what exactly it is-what I did not find was an actual Book of Jokes. So, I decided to write one. This one. The Great American Joke Book. A wise man once said: If we can't laugh at ourselves, at the way we live, or at our deepest and darkest convictions and secrets, then we are taking ourselves far too seriously and are denying to ourselves God's greatest gift-that gift being the uniquely human sense of humor. Divided into two parts. Part 1 is rated G, for general audiences-with true and amazing stories and great jokes for the whole family. Part 2 is Adult Humor, rated R, for those whose humorous tastes are a little more contemporary. Both sections are full of incredible laughter. Even now, as we are producing this book, I am still laughing at these stories, true tales, and great jokes. So take a few minutes-Laugh a few minutes-Let go of the rat race, and relax. It will lengthen your life. And remember the weighty words of that great Bard of Laughs, Ms. Lily Tomlin, as she so prophetically prognosticated some years ago: ""The trouble with the Rat Race is that even if you win, you're still a Rat."" So it's time for a piece of cheese, some wine, and some wit. Read on...

Despite the claim of many a Borscht Belt comic that he is a practitioner of "the world's second-oldest professsion," stand-up comedy is a young and distinctly American literary form. It was not until the last decades of the nineteenth century when, enabled by unprecedented prosperity and the right to free expression, that monologists began appearing in American vaudeville halls. Yet even though it has since become an entertainment industry mainstay, stand-up comedy has received precious little scholarly attention. The Legacy of the Wisecrack: Stand-up Comedy as the Great American Literary Form looks at the theory of stand-up comedy, its literary dimensions, and its distinctly American qualities as it provides a detailed history of the forces that shaped it. The study concludes with a look at the works of specific comedians such as Steven Wright, whose three decades of performances comprise a single picaresque tale, and Richard Pryor, whose 1982 masterpiece Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip serves as modern America's answer to Dante Aligheri's epic poem, Inferno. The result is one of the first serious treatments of stand-up comedy as a literary form.

As an academic social history, it includes the perspectives of a wide range of disciplines, including sociology, child development, social psychology, life style history, communication, and entertainment media. Readers will develop an understanding of the importance of humor as it has developed globally throughout history and appreciate its effects on child and adult development, especially in the areas of health, creativity, social development, and imagination. This two-volume set is available in both print and electronic formats. Features & Benefits: The General Editor also serves as Editor-in-Chief of HUMOR: International Journal of Humor Research for The International Society for Humor Studies. The book’s 335 articles are organized in A-to-Z fashion in two volumes (approximately 1,000 pages). This work is enhanced by an introduction by the General Editor, a Foreword, a list of the articles and contributors, and a Reader’s Guide that groups related entries thematically. A Chronology of Humor, a Resource Guide, and a detailed Index are included. Each entry concludes with References/Further Readings and cross references to related entries.
