Most of my other books are treatises on how to hunt or about field-craft. This is one is slightly different, yet it is still very much a book for the true hunter. It is a book exploring the hunters affinity with Nature. The hunter, the woodsman and the stalker enjoy the privilege of being amongst all of Natures wild charges. They see life in its most raw and understand the pattern of life and death. Indeed they often deal death to sustain life. So what mandate do they have from Nature to permit this? Where does the hunter sit in Natures grand scheme? What is Nature and where does she get her power? Man has searched for answers to these questions for millennia. In 2013 I read, for the first time in my life, the 'Tao Te Ching'. It is a philosophical work written some 2600 years ago by a philosopher and metaphysician called Lao Tzu. I am not a religious man and nor was he. I am fascinated by the power and wonder of Nature and so was he. This work, The Hunter's Way, is my own humble version of this mind-stretching philosophy. It is about accepting the wonder of things that we can never hope to fully understand. It is about the hunters rightful place in this grand order. More than that, it is about the moral code of the true hunter and huntress.

Hunting is our heritage, our heart, and our future. Where does hunting fit in the modern world? To many, it can seem outdated or even cruel, but as On Hunting affirms, hunting is holistic, honest, and continually relevant. Authors Grossman, Miller, and Cunningham dive deep into the ancient past of hunting and examine its position today, demonstrating that we cannot understand humanity without first understanding hunting. Readers will · discover how hunting formed us, · examine hunting ethics and their adaptation to modernity, · understand the challenges, traditions, and reverence of today’s hunter, · identify hunting skills and their many applications outside the field, · learn why hunting is critical to ecological restoration and preservation, and · gain inspiration to share hunting with others. Drawing from ecology, philosophy, and anthropology and sprinkled with campfire stories, this wide-ranging examination has rich depths for both nonhunters and hunters alike. On Hunting shows that we need hunting still—and so does the wild earth we inhabit.

Written for a wide range of readers in environmental science, philosophy, and policy-oriented programs The Routledge Companion to Environmental Ethics is a landmark, comprehensive reference work in this interdisciplinary field. Not merely a review of theoretical approaches to the ethics of the environment, the Companion focuses on specific environmental problems and other concrete issues. Its 65 chapters, all appearing in print here for the first time, have been organized into the following eleven parts: I. Animals II. Land III. Water IV. Climate V. Energy and Extraction VI. Cities VII. Agriculture VIII. Environmental Transformation IX. Policy Frameworks and Response Measures X. Regulatory Tools XI. Advocacy and Activism The volume not only explains the nuances of important core philosophical positions, but also cuts new pathways for the integration of important ethical and policy issues into environmental philosophy. It will be of immense help to undergraduate students and other readers coming up to the field for the first time, but also serve as a valuable resource for more advanced students as well as researchers who need a trusted resource that also offers fresh, policy-centered approaches.

A Book For Hunters. Follow, here, a deeply carved trail to where wild animals and hunters share natural existences. It is a trail well-cut and lined with decency, upon which we are guided by an author who proves beyond certainty that those demanding explanations are the one's lost. The author is a lifelong hunter and his perspectives have earned him acclaim in numerous outdoor magazines; his work being particularly prevalent in the industry standard, Deer & Deer Hunting Magazine where he is often featured on their renowned "back page." For a long while now, sociological caterings have beckoned humans to step on pins and needles to avoid offending anyone, but hunters do not appear to enjoy such leniencies. That's nothing new. This book traces the vitriol hunters in the sixties, seventies, and eighties, overcame only to face new challenges slung from irrationally emotional enemies that refuse to apply any form of sensitivity whatsoever toward we who hunt. To them, we are always in season. Unfortunately, hunters have for too long hastily fought back from a posture of equal angst. In doing so we reduce our potential to place the onus of explanation where it belongs-directly on the narrow shoulders of our opponents. This book will arm hunters with a more viable way to surgically and convincingly make our points. It will also challenge hunters to accept the mission of preserving our pastime. Page is not merely a cheerleader and has tough questions to be answered from within. What a shame it would be to beat back numerous outside nemeses only to somehow internally implode. There are problems to be dealt with and this book will expose a few of those in order to stimulate today's younger hunters to consider what the health of our future should look like. Originally, this book was to be aimed exclusively toward introspective hunters, and much of that element is still present. Hunting is not like bowling, golfing, kayaking, jogging, or the many other activities in which nothing dies. The ramifications of that should be respected while at the same time the reasons why any human is driven toward the hunt must be kept candidly open and honestly defended. The element of death is only prominent among those who need it to be; those critics must stay defeated at every turn. So, yes, half the book is devoted toward those type things, the morals, ethics, and correctness of nature; but there is also a good share of riveting stories. It is a good bet your own pulse will race as the author takes you along on some of the greatest highlights of his forty year career. Laugh along at rollicking youth, stare eye-ball to eye-ball from a ground blind and at full draw on an imposing black bear, endure frustrations that ultimately lead to grand victories, and finally, as age becomes a factor, sit alongside some fallen animals to quietly contemplate your own role in the circumstances presented to all living things. Why it is called Beyond The Shot will sift clear, and it is in fact a book written to defy suggestions that most hunters are not interested in the cerebral or heartfelt nature of what we do. Given that assumption, the industry has created its own void. You can bet your last shell there are many, many hunters that care to cultivate our interests far beyond simply killing animals. This book, concise as it is, will leave a resounding impact upon those type hunters. The stories are captivating, the philosophy compelling, and all in all, it offers fitting congratulations to all hunters who continue to fortify our determined role in nature.
