Seit den 1960er Jahren war er für mehrere US-Präsidenten, den nationalen Sicherheitsrat und das US-Außenministerium als Berater tätig. Überdies ist er Mitbegründer der Zeitschrift "Foreign Affairs". 1993 veröffentlichte er in dieser Zeitschrift, als Antwort auf die Frage nach der Weltordnung nach Ende des Kalten Krieges, einen Artikel mit der Überschrift "Kampf der Kulturen?". Drei Jahre später und nach zahlreichen, auf der ganzen Welt kontrovers geführten Diskussionen, publizierte Huntington ein Buch mit nahezu identischem Titel. Einziger Unterschied: Das Fragezeichen war verschwunden. Huntington entwickelt darin die Theorie, dass inter- und intrastaatliche Konflikte im 21. Jahrhundert vor allem kulturell begründet sind. Konflikte entstünden demnach fast ausschließlich zwischen Gruppen oder Staaten, die unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen zuzuordnen sind. Besonders großes Konfliktpotential besteht laut Huntington zwischen "dem Westen" und dem Islam sowie "dem Westen" und China. Dies sei nur als kurzer Abriss gegeben, doch genau diese Punkte sind es, welche die größten Kontroversen hervorrufen. Seit der Veröffentlichung von "Kampf der Kulturen" 1996 ist einiges von globaler Bedeutung geschehen, was die Diskussion um Huntingtons Thesen neu entfacht hat. Man denke nur an die Anschläge vom 11. Diese Auslegung erklärt auf der einen Seite seine methodische Vorgehensweise, auf der anderen Seite allerdings schottet sie Huntington selbst vor Kritik von wissenschaftlicher Seite ab: Wer kein wissenschaftliches Werk schreibt, kann auch von der Wissenschaft nicht kritisiert werden. In der folgenden Arbeit möchte ich die zentralen Thesen Huntingtons darstellen und diese auch anhand von Beispielen bewerten. Ein abschließendes Fazit soll meine persönliche Meinung zum „Kampf der Kulturen“ wiedergeben.

An examination of the role of history and memory is vital in order to better understand why the grand design of a United Europe--with a common foreign policy and market yet enough diversity to allow for cultural and social differences--was overwhelmingly turned down by its citizens. The authors argue that this rejection of the European constitution was to a certain extent a challenge to the current historical grounding used for further integration and further demonstrates the lack of understanding by European bureaucrats of the historical complexity and divisiveness of Europe's past. A critical European history is therefore urgently needed to confront and re-imagine Europe, not as a harmonious continent but as the outcome of violent and bloody conflicts, both within Europe as well as with its Others. As the authors show, these dark shadows of Europe's past must be integrated, and the fact that memories of Europe are contested must be accepted if any new attempts at a United Europe are to be successful.
