At 7 a.m. on August 29, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Louisiana coast between Grand Isle and the mouth of the Mississippi River as a strong Category 4 hurricane. The devastation she would bring to the Gulf Coast was widespread and unimaginable. Though warnings had been issued for days and evacuations initiated, thousands stood in the path of one of the strongest storms in the history of America. Left with no power, no drinking water, dwindling food supplies, and steadily rising waters from major levee breaches, survivors also faced life-threatening looting and widespread fires. Efforts to limit the flooding were initially unsuccessful and refugees from the hurricane fought for their very survival on the streets of New Orleans and throughout Louisiana and Mississippi. While tragedy and desperation brought out the worst in some, it also inspired courage and hope in others, giving them the will to triumph against incalculable odds.

Second Line Rescue: Improvised Responses to Katrina and Rita chronicles the brave and creative acts through which Gulf Coast people rescued their neighbors during the chaotic aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ordinary citizens joined in with whatever resources they had. Unlike many of the official responders, vernacular rescuers found ways around paralysis produced by a breakdown in communications and infrastructure. They were able to dispel unfounded fears produced by erroneous or questionable reporting. The essays, personal narratives, media reports, and field studies presented here all have to do with effective and often ingenious answers that emerged from the people themselves. Their solutions are remarkably different from the hamstrung government response, and their perspectives are a tonic to sensationalized media coverage. The first part of the collection deals with Gulf Coast rescuers from outside stricken communities: those who, safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, marshaled their resources to help their fellow citizens. It includes some analysis and scholarly approaches, but it also includes direct responses and firsthand field reports. The second part features the words of hurricane survivors displaced from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities to Houston, Texas. In many cases, the “victims” themselves were the first responders, rescuing family, friends, and strangers. All of the stories, whether from the “outside” or “inside” responders, reveal a shared history of close-knit community bonds and survival skills sharpened by hard times. This book is about what went right in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita—in spite of all that went so wrong.

One of the few inspirational stories that came out of Hurricane Katrina was the rescue of Tulane University Hospital and Clinic. During the days immediately following the New Orleans flood, Nashville-based hospital company HCA masterminded and financed the rescue of every Tulane patient, staffer and family member a total of 1,200 people in all. This is the inside story of how the company did it; what the administration knew and didnt know; how doctors and nurses cared for patients under difficult conditions; how dozens of helicopters executed the rescue safely. This book also tells the story of how Tulanes staff and administration helped rescue around 50 patients from other New Orleans hospitals, in spite of having almost no communication with those hospitals along the way.

Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, exposed the failings and incompetence of local, state, and federal officials, as well as the private sector and a host of other public and private agencies. This volume explores how inaction, lack of planning and undisguised greed insured that a category 3 hurricane would result in widespread destruction of both lives and property. It adopts a multifaceted approach to Hurricane Katrina, and includes studies from the fields of oral history, environmental science, physics, political science, sociology, and history. Part One provides first-hand accounts from people that lived through the hurricane and its aftermath. Part Two looks at how various entities responded, or failed to respond, to the disaster. Included in this section are articles on public health, tourism, environmental science, and the role of the Army Corp of Engineers. Part Three incorporates data from the aftermath of Katrina to suggest future responses to hurricanes and other natural/human made disasters. Finally, Harry Shearer, actor, radio host of Le Show, and director of The Big Uneasy, a documentary on Katrina and its aftermath, contributes an article on the various elements that went into the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina.

Waters Dark and Deep is the untold story of the rescue and reunification of one family, including the six-year-old boy that Time Magazine named a 2005 Local Hero of the Year. It's a story of love, friendship, survival against terrible odds, and the human spirit soaring above the rising floodwaters unleashed by the fury of Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster to hit America's shores in recent memory. Award-winning Newsday reporter Katie Thomas, who covered the story for her newspaper from the very beginning, follows the plight of one New Orleans family, two sisters and seven kids, as they weathered the hurricane, fled the rising floodwaters, and tried to begin new lives in a far-flung city. It's also the incredible story of the heroic efforts of all those who helped in their rescue, relocation, and reunification: National Guardsmen, police, volunteer groups, and private citizens.
