North American Admiral butterflies (genus Limenitis) have been the subjects of intense study for well over a century. Interest in this group stems largely from the observation that both wing pattern mimicry and hybridization are unusually common within this closely related complex of butterflies. Historically, this group has played a significant role in several traditional areas of evolutionary biology including the development of theoretical views on wing pattern evolution, mimicry, and the origins of species boundaries. Despite long standing interest in this group of butterflies, no previous molecular work has investigated patterns of relationships within this genus or addressed fundamental questions about the origins of mimicry and gene flow among closely related wing pattern races. To gain a better understanding of the role that wing pattern diversity has played in the history of speciation in this group, I have used phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and population genetic approaches to untangle the evolutionary history of this group. Here I show that the Neartic Admirals are derived from a single invasion from the Paleartic and are most closely related to the ubiquitous Poplar Admiral (L. populi). In addition, I document the species-level relationships among the North American forms and suggest that an ancestral host-plant switch from species of honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.) to tree species of Salicaceae facilitated the colonization of the Neartic and may have played a significant role in the origins of mimicry in this group. In addition, evidence from an extensive mitochondrial gene genealogy indicates that the three described subspecies of the polytypic L. arthemis species complex possess unique and deeply divergent mitochondrial haplotypes. Patterns of mitochondrial haplotype sharing indicate that the southwestern subspecies, L. a. arizonensis, is reproductively isolated from the two eastern wing pattern forms (L. a. arthemis and L. a. astyanax) and that both historical and contemporary gene flow has occurred between non-mimetic (L. a. arthemis) and mimetic (L. a. astyanax) populations in the eastern United States. Furthermore, it is clear from the mitochondrial genealogy that mimicry has evolved multiple times within this complex. Finally, nuclear gene genealogies demonstrate that southwestern mimetic populations of L. a. arizonensis diverged prior to the split between the two eastern wing pattern races and that these two latter populations retain substantial shared polymorphism due to both introgression and incomplete lineage sorting. Future work will focus on both QTL and association mapping as a first step in dissecting the genetic architecture of the wing pattern polymorphism observed between mimetic and non-mimetic populations of these butterflies.

Butterfly wing color patterns may indicate sex or distastefulness, may mimic other organisms, may act as camouflage, or they may confuse predators.
