As water demand is increasing in recent years and with the limited raw water sources available, efficient operation of water supply systems is necessary to increase potable water production and distribution, reduction in cost to the utility company and benefits to the consumers. This study was carried out to gauge the performance of Multimedia University's (MMU) existing water supply distribution system provisions for Phase 1 of MMU Development. WATNET Software was used to simulate the flow in pipe network. The performance of WA TNET Software was validated using field data collected from the existing water supply system under operation. It was also checked whether the design parameters and criteria selected for the water supply system design (by the designers) are appropriate and in compliance with the relevant guidelines and standards. For this purpose, desk study, detailed design/analysis and field measurements were necessary. Comparisons were done between the designed system and field measurements. Drinking water quality obtained from the reticulation system was also tested at the laboratory for compliance to drinking water quality standards. Based on the results, it was concluded that the overall distribution system is sufficient for Phase 1 of MMU development and is in compliance with the requirements. However, necessary measures need to be taken to improve the quality of the drinking water, i.e. free residual chlorine content. The existing reticulation mains are also able to convey an additional 2000m3/day of water for future MMU developments but with the modification/extension of the pumping and storage system.

Network of the study area is simulated by EPANET data of topography of the study area is collected using land survey instrument per the known latitudes, longitudes for the study area. The scheme design is organized so that required output is attained by using available input parameters like population of the study area, rate of growth in population and elevation at required point to install service reservoir. Therefore, with all the available input parameters, now the network is run through EPANET software and the results are thoroughly checked with standards. At the final stage, the output results that are obtained after successful run from EPANET tool, they are cross checked thoroughly with standard required values. If any of the corresponding values are not within acceptable bounds, then the network is adjusted accordingly to the required input parameters and again the network will be examined in EPANET software. This procedure is repeated until the parameters like velocity, friction factor, water head, pressure head, diameter and friction factor values are in the precise range. Pressure head at all nodes in the study area are having appropriate pressure to extract water. Flow in all pipes or links are adequate enough to survive the pressures at nodes. Roughness coefficients of pipes are all quite adequate as the head loss due to friction is little. It is also proposed to install air valves at high elevations and sluice valves at low elevations. The practical applications like: plan and improve a system’s hydraulic performance, improve the quality of water distributed to consumers and study the disinfectant using based on water type.

This study investigates the patterns that describe reliability of water distribution networks focusing to the node connectivity, energy balance, and economics of construction, operation and maintenance. A number of measures to evaluate the network resilience has been developed and assessed to arrive at more accurate diagnostics of regular and irregular demand scenarios. These measures have been proposed as a part of the methodology for snap-shot assessment of network reliability based on its configuration and hydraulic performance. Practical outcome of the research is the decision support tool for reliability-based design of water distribution networks. This computer package named NEDRA (NEtwork Design and Reliability Assessment) consists of the modules for network generation, filtering, initialisation, optimisation, diagnostics and cost calculation, which can be used for sensitivity analyses of single network layout or assessments of multiple layouts. The study concludes that none of the analysed aspects develops clear singular patterns. Nevertheless, the proposed network buffer index (NBI) and the hydraulic reliability diagram (HRD) as visual representation of the network resilience give sufficient snap-shot pointing the composition of the index value, and displaying possible weak points in the network that can be hidden behind the averaged values of various reliability measures.

This thesis presents a new framework named the Multi-objective Stochastic Design Method (MOSDM) that can be used to guide the design and rehabilitation of water distribution networks. In the design process, the MOSDM seeks to answer three fundamental questions. What loads can come to bear on a water distribution network? How frequently will a water distribution network fail when subjected to these loads, and how quickly on average will it recover from failure? And when loads cause a network to fail, what are the consequences and damages? To answer these three questions, a Monte Carlo Simulation is used to simulate hydraulic failures in a network subject to stochastic loads (e.g., demand, fire flows, and pipe breaks) and to update probabilistic measures of reliability, resilience, expected annual damages, and the probability of catastrophic failure. The last two measures are developed in this thesis to characterize the human and economic consequences and damages of hydraulic failure in distribution networks. A case study shows that the MOSDM can identify design alternatives with a low damage level and a low probability of catastrophic failure. The MOSDM is also used to develop an intensity-duration-frequency methodology to guide the rehabilitation of cul-de-sacs---a major component in most networks---in a manner that balances the duration (measure of severity) and frequency of hydraulic and water quality failures. In anticipation that the MOSDM may be applied to design real networks in the future, an uncertainty analysis is undertaken to investigate how, and to what extent, uncertainties in the covariances of demand---the most important load category in most networks---affect network costs (capital and operating) as well as the network performance assessed with the probabilistic measures of reliability, resilience, and expected annual damages. Preliminary results suggest that whether uncertainties in the covariances of demand exert a significant influence on cost and performance in design depends in large part on the presence of tank storage.

The construction, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems (WDSs) involve a huge capital investment and it is essential to design and manage them in a cost effective way. The optimisation approaches (e.g. evolutionary algorithms) for optimal design or operation of WDSs require simulation models to evaluate the hydraulic and/or water quality performances of solutions to the problem. An accurate performance assessment of solutions (feasible and infeasible) is crucial to guide the search towards the optimal solution efficiently. Conventional models are demand-driven and consequently they are incapable of simulating pressure-deficient (infeasible) solutions accurately. When simulating a pressure-deficient network, results produced by demand-driven analysis model are highly unreliable and misleading. This thesis is concerned with the development and application of a new integrated head-dependent hydraulic and water quality model for pressure-deficient network modelling and optimisation of real-world systems. The original and novel aspects of the work carried out in this research are stated next. A new pressure dependent analysis (PDA) model has been developed for pressure-deficient network modelling. The model is an enhanced version of the pressure-dependent extension of EPANET (EPANET-PDX) that has an embedded logistic nodal head-flow function. The novelty of the proposed PDA is the formulation of a new, more efficient and robust implementation of the line search and backtracking procedure that greatly enhances computational properties for highly pressure-deficient networks; and increases the algorithm's consistency over a wider range of operating conditions. The model performed consistently well when simulating hypothetical and real-life networks under normal and pressure deficient conditions. Comparison between results generated by the new model and the original EPANET-PDX demonstrated that the two models produce identical hydraulic results. From a numerical perspective, a significant reduction in numbers of iterations to complete a simulation has been obtained for all pressure operating conditions. Also, for extremely pressure deficient conditions a significant reduction in computational time has been achieved in comparison to the original EPANET-PDX. Water quality modelling under pressure-deficient conditions is addressed for the first time in this thesis. Hydraulic and water quality analyses based on two water supply zones in the UK were conducted for a range of simulated operating conditions including normal and subnormal pressure and pipe closures using PDA. It is shown that operating conditions with subnormal pressures, if severe and protracted, can lead to spatial and temporal distributions of the water age and concentrations of chlorine and disinfection by-products that are significantly different from operating conditions in which the pressure is satisfactory .A new parallel model for the solution of multi-objective WDSs optimisation problems is developed. The model utilises a multi-objective genetic algorithm that has an embedded PDA hydraulic simulator. The PDA takes into account the pressure dependency of the nodal flows and thus avoids the need for penalties to address violations of the nodal pressure constraints. A controller-worker approach is implemented to parallelise the optimisation process in which a single controller processor executes the routine operation of the algorithm and employs the workers to carry out fitness evaluation. A real-life network that comprises multiple sources, multiple demand categories, many fire flows and extended period simulation is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the model. Results show that the algorithm is stable and finds optimal and near-optimal solutions reliably and efficiently.
