In all over the world we are facing energy crises. Our consumption is increasing day by day that is conflict with our oil and gas resources. To overcome this situation we should move toward alternate and environment friendly resources just like hydrogen. Hydrogen is a green fuel mean no emission of carbon when it is combusted. Pakistan is on 5th number for coal reserves that's why i selected production of hydrogen via coal gasification. In this study the phenomenon of gasification which is the conversion of carbonaceous fuels into Syngas comprising of CO and H2 is under taken. A combination of the following steps is being used. Coal is fed to a downdraft gasifier and the gases, after gasification in a gasifier are first cooled recovering heat in waste heat boiler and then forwarded towards scrubber to minimize the concentration of solid particulates which are hard to be tolerated by downstream unit, the membrane. Since hydrogen required is of high purity therefore polymeric membrane is used to separate hydrogen from rest of the gases. This project will helpful for all energy sectors and research work.

This book documents the advantages and limitations of various electricity generation methods. It illustrates how both electricity and motor fuel can be cost-effectively derived from coal, natural gas or other indigenous fuels, thereby eliminating our dependence on imported oil and the power of OPEC. It favours electricity generation systems powered exclusively by natural gas, coal, nuclear and renewables and motor vehicles powered by hydrogen (electricity from coal gasification with carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and hydrogen as the fuel powering fuel-cell electric vehicles produced from natural gas or by gasifying coal With CCS.) The book also demonstrates that the US can meet the Climate Change goal of reducing all greenhouse gases by 80% below 1990 levels in both the transportation and electric utility sectors using hydrogen and coal.

There have been many studies in the energy field to achieve different goals such as energy security, energy independence and production of cheap energy. The consensus of the general population is that renewable energy sources can be used on a short-term basis to compensate for the energy requirement of the world. However, the prediction is that fossil fuels will be used to provide the majority of energy requirements in the world at least on a short-term basis. Coal is one of the major fossil fuels and will be used for a long time because there are large coal reservoirs in the world and many products such as hydrogen, ammonia, and diesel can be produced using coal. In the present study, the performance of a clean energy system that combines the coal gasification and alkaline water electrolyzer concepts to produce hydrogen is evaluated through thermodynamic modeling and simulations. A parametric study is conducted to determine the effect of water ratio in coal slurry, gasifier temperature, effectiveness of carbon dioxide removal, and hydrogen recovery efficiency of the pressure swing adsorption unit on the system hydrogen production. In addition, the effects of different types of coals on the hydrogen production are estimated. The exergy efficiency and exergy destruction in each system component are also evaluated. Although this system produces hydrogen from coal, the greenhouse gases emitted from this system are fairly low.

Coal is the largest fossil energy resource and, in spite of its 19th century image, coal has proven itself in the last quarter of the 20th century as a modern and remarkably cost-effective fuel for generating electric power. Today, with increasing concern over greenhouse gases, coal needs to overcome the obstacle of being the most carbon intensive energy source there is. To clear this hurdle and provide a modern and environmentally viable energy resource based on abundant coal reserves is the goal of Vision 21. The strategy of Vision 21 rests on the production of high quality gaseous fuels like hydrogen that could either leave the plant or be used in the production of electricity by highly efficient fuel cell stacks. Here the authors outline three processing steps, that combined or separately can greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from coal. First, they propose to perform the gasification and water-gas shift reaction for producing hydrogen from coal with calcium oxide as a getter for carbon dioxide. This provides an efficient means to collect the carbon dioxide for reuse or disposal. Simultaneously, the carbonation facilitates the formation of hydrogen and provides the energy necessary to drive the hydrogen producing reaction to completion. In the second step, the calcium oxide would be regenerated either by a conventional calcination process or, as they propose to investigate, in a solar furnace. The latter approach would lead to a novel hybrid solar/fossil power plant that derives about 30% of its energy output from solar energy. Finally, they propose to develop a solar driven process, that generates methanol from waste carbon dioxide. In a photolytic process, CO2 is broken up into CO and O2. The CO is then reacted with water in a conventional process to form methanol.

Hydrogen holds out the promise of a truly sustainable global energy future. As a clean energy carrier that can be produced from any primary energy source, hydrogen used in highly efficient fuel cells could prove to be the answer to our growing concerns about energy security, urban pollution and climate change. This prize surely warrants the attention and resources currently being directed at hydrogen even if the prospects for widespread commercialisation of hydrogen in the foreseeable future are uncertain.
