This book presents a systematic approach to understanding and applying the principles of hydrology and hydroclimatology, examining the interactions among different components of the water cycle. It takes a fresh look at the fundamentals and challenges in hydrologic and hydroclimatic systems as well as climate change. The author describes the application of nontraditional data sets and new investigation techniques to water-related problems. He also examines long lead forecasting and simulation, time series analysis, and risk and uncertainty in hydrologic design.

This second edition focuses on the application of statistical methods in the field of hydrology and hydroclimatology. Among the latest theories being used in these fields, the book introduces the theory of copulas and its applications in this context. The purpose is to develop an understanding and illustrate the usefulness of the statistical techniques with detailed theory and numerous worked out examples. Apart from this, sample scripts based on MATLAB, Python and R for some examples are also provided to assist the readers to handle real life data. Besides serving as a textbook for graduate courses on stochastic modeling in hydrology and related disciplines, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers and professionals involved in the field of hydrology and climatology.

The hydro-climatological approach of this volume illustrates the scientific and practical value of considering hydrological phenomena and processes in a climate context to improve understanding of controls, process interaction, and past and future variability/change. Contributions deal with understanding hydrological systems given historic observed climate variability, or utilise climate models to project future climate scenarios and then assess the resultant hydrological consequences. Human interventions water storages, extracation, irrigation, land-use change i.e. the societal context, are also considered. The inter-disciplinary approach reveals information and perspectives that go beyond the study of climate and hydrology alone.

The field of study concerned with the changes in the hydrological cycle, due to climate systems is known as hydroclimatology. It focuses on developing a systematic structure in order to interpret such changes with respect to space and time on a global as well as local scale. Hydroclimatology integrates the principles of climate science and hydrology in order to better understand the natural phenomena of floods, global warming and droughts. This book brings forth some of the most innovative concepts and unexplored aspects of this field. It studies, analyses and upholds the pillars of hydroclimatology and its utmost significance in modern times. It aims to serve as a resource guide for students, experts, researchers, academicians, climatologists and hydrologists.

Hydroclimatology has emerged as a new discipline in line with increasing awareness of the connected nature of land-surface-atmosphere processes. Changes in landuse affect the atmospheric moisture conditions, not only locally but also at a continental scale. Similarly, climate change influences river basin hydrology and water resources. A good understanding of the atmospheric contribution to the regional water cycle is important for sound (integrated) water resources planning and management at river basin scale. The Nile Basin is characterized by increasing water demands in the downstream areas and high evaporation from the Upper Nile swamps. This has led to the planning and construction of river short-cut channels to intercept the water feeding the wetlands. Despite the importance of the wetlands to the local environment, and, it is thought, as a supplier of additional Nile water, its exact hydrology and its interaction with the climate is largely unknown. This study aims
