Hyperides was ranked in antiquity as second in greatness only to Demosthenes amongst the Ten Attic Orators. His execution in 322 BC for opposition to Macedonian rule left Dinarchus as the last of the Ten to survive. This book critically evaluates the speeches of both orators against Demosthenes and discusses Hyperides' funeral oration as an important historical source for understanding Athens in the last years of the reign of Alexander the Great. The history of the period of discussed in detail, as is the rhetorical style of the two orators. Amongst other distinctions this text provides the first commentary in English on Hyperides' two speeches. A Greek text of Dinarchus' and Hyperides' fragmented speeches is provided along with an English translation. The commentary is essentially historical, but some literary and philological points are also discussed.

Mr. F. G. Kenyon, the editor of Classical Texts from the Papyri of the British Museum, now gives us a readable English version of the two recently recovered orations of Hyperides, together with the Greek text. The papyrus MS. of the oration against Athenogenes, now in the Louvre, is, with the exception of some fragments, the oldest existing, the date suggested being that of B.C. 328. It is a fine piece of pleading, vigorous, clear, and persuasive, for the case of the client of Hyperides (whose name is not known) was weak in law, if strong in equity, and needed all the skill of the advocate for its effective presentation. Under Athenian law the purchaser of a slave became liable for all his debts, and in the present instance the wily Athenogenes had obtained a formal agreement from the plaintiff to buy a slave named Midas on the assurance that the debts of a perfumery business which he had managed were trifling and would be covered by the sale of the stock. The liabilities, however, proved so heavy as to mean ruin to the new owner of Midas, and accordingly, it is argued, that an engagement brought about by cajolery (for a certain Antigona appears as a go-between) and by false statement ought not to be held binding. The development of the case is full of interest, and the manner of the speech singularly natural and telling. The oration against Philippides has less dramatic interest, and the MS. shows considerable lacunae. As an "advocate in a social cause célèbre," says Mr. Kenyon, "or in any matter requiring light and delicate handling, Hyperides was held to be unequalled," being considered superior even to Demosthenes. -The Westminster Review, Volume 141 [1907]

This is the fifth volume in the Oratory of Classical Greece. This series presents all of the surviving speeches from the late fifth and fourth centuries B.C. in new translations prepared by classical scholars who are at the forefront of the discipline. These translations are especially designed for the needs and interests of today's undergraduates, Greekless scholars in other disciplines, and the general public. Classical oratory is an invaluable resource for the study of ancient Greek life and culture. The speeches offer evidence on Greek moral views, social and economic conditions, political and social ideology, law and legal procedure, and other aspects of Athenian culture that have been largely ignored: women and family life, slavery, and religion, to name just a few. This volume combines the surviving speeches of three orators who stand at the end of the classical period. Dinarchus was not an Athenian, but he was called on to write speeches in connection with a corruption scandal (the Harpalus affair) that put an end to the career of Demosthenes. His speeches thus raise many of the vital issues surrounding the Macedonian conquest of Athens and the final years of Athenian democracy. Hyperides was an important public figure who was involved in many of the events described by Dinarchus and Lycurgus. His speeches open a window into many interesting facets of Athenian life. Lycurgus was one of the leading politicians in Athens during the reign of Alexander the Great and put Athenian public finances on a more secure footing. He was also a deeply religious man, who tried to revive Athenian patriotism after the crushing defeat at Chaeronea.
