The proceedings of a workshop conference are presented in this volume entitled Hypothalamic Peptide Hormones and Pituitary Regulation. The workshop was held in Wilson Hall on the campus of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, during the days of November 1-2, 1976, and is the most recent of three symposia on neuroendocrinology that have been sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The first one was held on December 6 - 8, 1961, in the New Everglades Hotel at Miami, Florida. During the first meeting, much emphasis was given to the anatomical and physiological basis for the fledgling science of neuroendocrinology. The proceedings of that symposium were published under the title of Advances in Neuroendocrinology, A. V. Nalbandov (ed. ), University of Illinois Press, Urbana, Illinois, 1963. The second workshop was held on January 8 -11, 1969, in the Arizona Inn at Tucson, Arizona, and was unique in several respects. It was evident to the participants that definitive identification and the determination of the chemical structure of at least one hypothalamic releasing factor was at hand (see Workshop Conference on Bioassay and Chemistry of the Hypophysio tropic Hormones of the Hypothalamus: ~Critical Evaluatioi'i':-J. Meites, ed. , The Williams and Wilkins Co. , Baltimore, Maryland, 1970). Much of what was presented at the second workshop was dedicated to methods of bioassay of the various releasing factors.

The concept of hormonal regulation using intercellular peptide messengers dates back to the discovery of secretin in 1902. The concept was simple: A peptide is released from specific hormone producing cells, endocrine cells, into circulation upon stimulation of the cells. The peptide hormone travels via blood to its target, the cells of which are equipped with specific receptors for high-affinity binding of the particular peptide hormone. Receptor binding subsequently elicits action of the target cells. This concept has been seriously challenged by modern biochemistry and cell biology. Thus, it is now well established that the gene of a specific peptide hormone may be expressed in different types of endocrine cells, in neurons, and in some instances also in adipocytes, myocytes, osteoblasts, and immune cells. Today, only a few hormones – including the old master hormone insulin – represent the original endocrine paradigm. Instead, the widespread cellular synthesis now raises the qu- tion of how the body maintains the regulation of its functions by peptide hormones when a hormone may originate from a variety of cells.

Hypothalamic Hormones is a collection of papers that elucidates the various aspects, chemical properties, effects, and history of hypothalamic hormones. The book is composed of five chapters on the detailed study of hypothalamic hormones. Chapter 1 is about a review of basic and clinical studies of corticotropin releasing factor (CRF); thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH); prolactin releasing factor; prolactin-release inhibiting factor; factors affecting the release of melanotropin; luteinizing hormone release hormone (LHRH); growth hormone release factor; and somatostatin. The second chapter is a discussion on the various aspects of luteinizing hormone release hormone (LHRH). Subsequent chapters are concerned with the study of factors that control the secretion of growth hormone, with particular emphasis on brain neurotransmitters; the mechanism of action of hypothalamic hormones; and effects of androgens, estrogens, and other peripheral hormones on the hypothalamus function. The last chapter gives a history of neurosecretion and neuroendocrinology. Biochemists, physicians, pharmacologists, endocrinologists, researchers, and students in the medical field will find this book invaluable.

According to the classical concept of Geoffrey Harris the pituitary gland is controlled by the brain by means of blood-borne chemical messengers produced by central neurons. The recent isolation and structural characterization of several such messengers by Roger Guillemin and Andrew Schally and their collaborators brought the final proof for this hypothesis. This also meant that the extensive knowledge collected in the field of neurobiology now became highly relevant for the endocrinologists. For this reason it was felt important to organize a symposium which brought together experts in the fields of neurobiology and endocrinology. The idea was to focus the attention on neuronal mechanisms, particularly those related to chemical transmission, which may be of importance for the central regulation of hormonal secretion patterns. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Nobel Founda tion for supporting the organization of the Nobel Symposium 42 on "Principles of the Central Regulation of the Endocrine System". We would also like to express our thanks to all participants, to Professor Carl-Gustaf Bernhard, Permanent Secretary of the Royal Academy of Sciences, for making the facilities of the Academ- available to us, and to the Symposium secretaries Mrs. Gun Hultgren, Mrs. Lena Persson and Mrs. Ulla-Britt Wedin. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the generous financial support from the Nobel Foundation and its Nobel Symposium Committee through grants from the Tercentenary Foundation of the Bank of Sweden, and from the Swedish Medical Research Council, KABI AB, Stockholm, and ASTRA AB, Sodertalje.

The tenth meeting of the International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology was held in Geilo, Norway near the end of September, 1982. The subject matter of the conference and the monograph was on "Regulation of Target Cell Respon siveness." The local organizing committee was Asbjjllrn Aakvaag and Vidar Hansson. The scientific sessions covered a wide range of hormone action and cell response, including: peptide hormones and target cell response, regulation of insulin responsiveness, intracellular modulation of peptide hormone response, gonado tropins and target cell responses, hypothalamic hormone- effects and regulation, steroid receptors and cellular control, hormones and growth regulation, and hormones and gene regulation. The chairpersons for the sessions were L. Birnbauer -A. Aakvaag, S. Taylor- R. S. Horn, F. Labrie- F. Rommerts, A. R. Means - K. W. McKerns, P. F. Hall - V. Hansson K. Griffiths - K. M. Gautvik, E. J. Peck, Jr. -E. Haug, F. S. French- W. T. Schrader, and E. M. Ritzen- B. Jegou. In addition to the scientific sessions in Geilo we were all delighted to sample some of the cultural and artistic attractions of Oslo, and to travel by train from Oslo via Geilo to Bergen. The scenery and hospitality were magnifi cant.

Near the end of September 1980, the contributors to Hormonally Active Brain Pep tides: Structure and Function met to discuss their chapters for the monograph. This meeting was the eighth sponsored by the International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology and was held at the Hotel Plakir in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. Several months were allowed after the meeting for the contributors to revise their manuscripts and for editing. Professor Dr. Vladimir Pantie and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts were in charge of the local arrangements and social activities. The Foundation is grateful for the splendid job that was done and for the out standing scientific, cultural, and social activities. I thank the Serbian Acad emy of Sciences and Arts and the Yugoslav Council of Academies for spon soring my stay in Yugoslavia. I greatly enjoyed giving lectures, visiting laboratories, and discussing research projects in a number of centers in Yugoslavia. A diverse group of topics was presented in Dubrovnik concerning cer tain brain peptides. The topics included "Structure, Function, and Confor mation of Neuropeptides," "Distribution of Peptides in the Brain," "Reg ulation of the Release of Peptide Hormones," "The Active Center of Gonadotropins," "In Vitro Synthesis of Hypothalamic Hormones," "Stud ies on Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone," "Studies on the Biosynthesis, Release, and Degradation of LH-RH," "Genesis and Properties of Pitu itary ACTH, Prolactin, and Growth Hormone Producing Cells," "Precur sors to Oligopeptide Hormones," and "Stress Effects on Peptide Hormone Synthesis
