Leidensgeschichte eines Mädchens“ (1895) von Gabriele Reuter wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit untersucht, wie eine weibliche Schriftstellerin um die Jahrhundertwende den herrschenden Weiblichkeits- und Hysteriediskursen begegnete. Dafür erfolgt eine Betrachtung der kulturellen Deutungen, sozial verbindlichen Normen und Werten einerseits sowie weiblichen Handlungspotentialen, Mustern der Selbstwahrnehmung und konformen wie abweichendem Verhalten andererseits. Die ambivalente Haltung der Autorin zum eigenen Geschlecht und ihrer eigenen literarischen Tätigkeit soll untersucht werden, ebenso wie die Frage, inwieweit ihre Werke von bestehenden Weiblichkeitsideologien und Diskurspraktiken der Zeit beeinflusst wurden. Die widersprüchliche Position der Frauen soll beleuchtet und erklärt werden. Es soll die Frage beantwortet werden, ob Hysterie als soziale Rolle behandelt wird und welche Funktion sie besaß. Warum wählten Frauen die Charakterzüge der Hysterie, um ihr Unbehagen oder ihren Ärger auszudrücken? Welche Intention verfolgt Reuter selbst mit ihrem Werk? Den Hauptteil der vorliegenden Arbeit bildet die Analyse des Romans „Aus guter Familie. Leidensgeschichte eines Mädchens“ von Gabriele Reuter. Die ‚Leidensgeschichte‘ der Protagonistin Agathe Heidling wird durch die Faktoren dargestellt, die zum Verlust ihrer Identität und Individualität beitrugen und letztendlich zum Ausbruch der Hysterie führen: die widersprüchliche bürgerliche Mädchenerziehung, die Analyse von Parallelbiographien zu Agathe, die unterdrückte Sexualität sowie der Wahnsinnsausbruch der Protagonistin. Neben der vordergründig textimmanenten Interpretation sollen theoretische Ausführungen zu Weiblichkeit miteinbezogen werden. Auf eine detaillierte Inhaltswiedergabe wird zugunsten einer Beschreibung der Erzählstruktur und vorliegender Forschungsdiskurse verzichtet.

Dabei soll zunächst ein knapper historischer Überblick über die medizinisch-psychiatrischen Theorien der Hysterie am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gegeben werden. Im Anschluss daran liegt der Fokus auf den um die Jahrhundertwende zirkulierenden Konzeptionen von Weiblichkeit und Krankheit respektive Hysterie. Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit behandelt den literarischen Kontext der Jahrhundertwende. Der Fokus liegt dabei vor allem auf den Lebensbedingungen der schreibenden Frauen dieser Zeit. In einem nächsten Schritt soll anhand der Texte weiblicher und männlicher Signatur skizziert werden, wie diese AutorInnen die herrschenden Deutungen um Weiblichkeit und weiblicher Psychopathologie behandeln und welche Unterschiede gegebenenfalls signifikant sind. Bei den analysierten Texten handelt es sich um Theodor Fontanes Roman „Cécile“ (1887), Hedwig Dohms Novelle „Werde, die du bist!“ (1894) und dem Roman „Halbtier“ (1897) von Helene Böhlau. Die Analyse des Romans „Aus guter Familie“ von Gabriele Reuter bildet den Hauptteil der vorliegenden Arbeit. Der ‚Leidensweg’ der Protagonistin Agathe Heidling soll anhand der Faktoren nachgezeichnet werden, die die Zerstörung ihrer Identität und Individualität bedingen und die letztendlich zur Internierung in eine Nervenheilanstalt führen. Neben der im Vordergrund stehenden textimmanenten Interpretation sollen immer wieder die theoretischen Ausführungen Irigarays zu Weiblichkeit und weiblicher Subjektivität miteinbezogen werden.
