Türk edebiyatında, Hz. Ali’nin hayatı ve İslam uğruna yaptığı savaşlar etrafında teşekkül etmiş, çeşitli yönlerden dikkat çekici edebî tür, cenk-nâme yahut gazavat-nâmelerdir. Sayısı yüzleri bulan manzum ve mensur Hz. Ali cenk-nâmeleri, özellikle meddahlık geleneği içerisinde kendisine ayrı bir yer edinmiş ve bu türde ilk örneğine ulaşabildiğimiz 13. asırdan 20. asra kadar ekseriyeti anonim olan pek çok metin ortaya konulmuştur. Bu kitabın konusunu, daha evvel edebî literatüre girmemiş bir şairin iki manzum Hz. Ali cenk-nâmesi teşkil etmektedir. Söz konusu şair, 19. asırda Diyarbakır’a bağlı Ergani’de yaşamış Ayân-zâde Molla İbrahim Şükrî’dir. Şairin, 1603 beyitlik Kan Kalesi ve 4511 beyitlik Hâver-zemîn mesnevilerinin tek yazma nüshası, Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Türkçe Yazmaları Y. 790’da bulunmaktadır. Giriş ve dört bölümden müteşekkil kitabın birinci bölümünde, manzum Hz. Ali cenk-nâmeleri hakkında genel bir değerlendirmenin ardından kütüphanelerde kayıtlı, ulaşabildiğimiz bütün manzum cenk-nâmelerin nüshaları tanıtılarak ilk defa toplu bir kataloğu hazırlanmıştır. Manzum cenklerin özetleri ve bu sahadaki çalışmalar hakkında da bilgi verilmiştir. İkinci bölümde; Ayân-zâde İbrahim Şükrî’nin hayatı, edebî şahsiyeti ve eserleri ele alınmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde; şairin “Kıssa-i Kan Kal’ası” ve “Hikâye-i Hâver-zemîn” adlı mesnevilerinin şekil yönünden tahlili ve Thompson’ın Motif Index esaslı muhteva tahliliyle birlikte metinlerin günümüz Türkçesine çevrimine de yer verilmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde; Kan Kalesi ve Hâver-zemîn mesnevilerinin transkripsiyon usulüyle Arap harflerinden Latin harflerine aktarımı yapılmıştır. Bu çalışmayla bilinmeyen bir şair ve onun konuya ait yayınlarda üzerinde durulmayan eserleri gün yüzüne çıkmıştır.
