The study of clothes and dressing has great potential for social and cultural history. Typically Ottoman urbanites situated their fellow men after a glance at the clothing worn by the latter. As to the women, such conclusions were more difficult to draw, as all females were to be modestly covered up and ideally almost invisible. Yet in practice, at least from the eighteenth century onwards, it was often possible, at least in Istanbul, to distinguish fashionable from soberly pious women. To be aware of people's modes of dressing thus was part of knowing one's way around in Ottoman society. -- cover.

Ottoman Dress and Design in the West is a richly illustrated exploration of the relationship between West and Near East through the visual culture of dress. Charlotte Jirousek examines the history of dress and fashion in the broader context of western relationships with the Mediterranean world from the dawn of Islam through the end of the twentieth century. The significance of dress is made apparent by the author's careful attention to its political, economic, and cultural context. The reader comes to understand that dress reflects not simply the self and one's relation to community but also that community's relation to a wider world through trade, colonization, religion, and technology. The chapters provide broad historical background on Ottoman influence and European exoticization of that influence, while the captions and illustrations provide detailed studies of illuminations, paintings, and sculptures to show how these influences were absorbed into everyday living. Through the medium of dress, Jirousek details a continually shifting Ottoman frontier that is closely tied to European and American history. In doing so, she explores and celebrates an essential source of influence that for too long has been relegated to the periphery.

A stunning collection of annotated plates of thirty military ranks and roles in the early nineteenth-century Imperial Ottoman army English writings on the Ottoman empire grew in the seventeenth century, following the establishment of official commercial relations between London and the Sublime Porte in 1580 and a permanent English diplomatic mission at Istanbul in 1583. This stunningly produced reprint of the classic The Military Costume of Turkey: Illustrated by a Series of Engravings from Drawings Made on the Spot: Dedicated by Permission to His Excellency the Minister of the Ottoman Porte to His Britannic Majesty, originally published in 1818 by London publishers Thomas McLean, features a set of annotated plates with descriptions of thirty military ranks and roles in the Imperial Ottoman army. The images, which are carefully colored by hand, depict costumes of the Ottoman army on the eve of drastic early-nineteenth-century military reforms that were to lead to major changes in army apparel. They not only reflect the way in which costume in Ottoman society was directly linked to social status, rank, and power, but also European fascination with the Ottomans' attention to and emphasis on dress and public appearance. With an introduction by historian Tamer el-Leithy.

This exhibition catalog illustrates - through many figures and accompanying essays - the styles and style changes of the Ottoman court, the glamour and beauty of which were hardly seen publicly. It also demonstrates the influence of western fashion currents, which in the Turkish fashion metropolis of Istanbul were combined with traditional Ottoman styles. English & German text.
