This book, the second in a series of three on cognitive science, explains how natural language is not just a means of communication but is essential to what is often referred to as human thought or reason. An analog model of human cognition is developed and used to explain how humans have created mathematics, science, literature, history and psychology with a two-part mind. The first part, which we inherited from our primate cousins, does not use words while the second part uses language to tell stories of our past, to coordinate activities in the present and plan future events.

The humanist's plaintive cry, "I am not a machine" is in response to the mainstream cognitive science view that the human mind is similar to a computational machine, what scientist's call a formal system. In a series of three books, Dr. Lynch challenges these mainstream theories by showing how human cognition consists of two parts: a part inherited from the nonhuman primates that is not based on language, and a part that is based on human natural syntactic language. Natural language is therefore, not just a means of communication, as asserted by most cognitive scientists, but is essential to what is often referred to as human thought or reason. Humans can, of course, think without using language but only in a way that is also shared by our chimp cousins. Characterizing that languageless mode of cognition is the focus of this first book, Thinking Without Words.

FINALIST FOR 2018 KIRKUS PRIZE NAMED ONE OF THE "BEST LITERARY FICTION OF 2018' BY KIRKUS REVIEWS "Sci-fi in its most perfect expression…Reading it is like having a lucid dream of six years from next week, filled with people you don't know, but will." —NPR "[Williams’s] wit is sharp, but her touch is light, and her novel is a winner." – San Francisco Chronicle "Between seasons of Black Mirror, look to Katie Williams' debut novel." —Refinery29 Smart and inventive, a page-turner that considers the elusive definition of happiness. Pearl's job is to make people happy. As a technician for the Apricity Corporation, with its patented happiness machine, she provides customers with personalized recommendations for greater contentment. She's good at her job, her office manager tells her, successful. But how does one measure an emotion? Meanwhile, there's Pearl's teenage son, Rhett. A sensitive kid who has forged an unconventional path through adolescence, Rhett seems to find greater satisfaction in being unhappy. The very rejection of joy is his own kind of "pursuit of happiness." As his mother, Pearl wants nothing more than to help Rhett--but is it for his sake or for hers? Certainly it would make Pearl happier. Regardless, her son is one person whose emotional life does not fall under the parameters of her job--not as happiness technician, and not as mother, either. Told from an alternating cast of endearing characters from within Pearl and Rhett's world, Tell the Machine Goodnight delivers a smartly moving and entertaining story about the advance of technology and the ways that it can most surprise and define us. Along the way, Katie Williams playfully illuminates our national obsession with positive psychology, our reliance on quick fixes. What happens when these obsessions begin to overlap? With warmth, humor, and a clever touch, Williams taps into our collective unease about the modern world and allows us see it a little more clearly.

Humans can, of course, think without using language but only in a way that is also shared by our chimp cousins. His first book, subtitled Thinking without Words, characterized that languageless mode of cognition. His second book in the series was subtitled Thinking with Words and focused on the role of natural language in human thought. The third book, subtitled Rethinking Cognitive Psychology, completes the trilogy on cognition and grounds the concepts developed in the first two books by analyzing specific details of the brain and mind. Book III of I Am Not a Machine addresses the brain's organization, neurochemical system, sensory perception and motor control systems, and human emotion. Many aspects of human cognition can be best understood as they unfold, and therefore Book III explores aspects of the human development. The second half of Book III deals with the developmental disorders of high functioning autism, Asperger's Syndrome, and Savant Syndrome. A cognitive analysis of these disorders provides a way of bridging the gap between low-levelneural aspects of the brain with a high-level characterization of behavior.

Most of us are much better at supporting the idea of prayer than we are at praying. This book combines Scriptural insights on pleasing God in prayer with practical insights on making prayer effective. Making prayer effective, however, doesn’t mean “getting what we want.” Hinten tells how to use prayer to move from a desire for what we want to a desire for what God wants. And, in the “Putting Prayer Into Practice” section at the end of each chapter, he suggests specific techniques and topics to help readers meet their goal of not just reading about prayer, but praying. Best of all, while this book is intellectually stimulating, it is also eminently readable, with clear examples and an engaging sense of humor.

"The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster, now presented in a beautifully illustrated edition, is a visionary and thought-provoking novella that explores the perils of technological dependency and the potential consequences of a society overly reliant on machines. Set in a future where humanity lives underground, isolated in individual cells, their every need attended to by an all-encompassing Machine, the story follows Vashti, a lecturer and true believer in the Machine's omnipotence. However, as the Machine begins to show signs of malfunction, Vashti's worldview is challenged, leading to a series of events that question the very foundations of her society. "The Machine Stops" remains a compelling exploration of the dangers of sacrificing human connections for the convenience of technology. This illustrated edition provides a fresh perspective on Forster's timeless work, making it an engaging and visually captivating experience for both new and returning readers.

From the Booker Prize winner and bestselling author of Atonement—”a sharply intelligent novel of ideas” (The New York Times) that asks whether a machine can understand the human heart, or whether we are the ones who lack understanding. Set in an uncanny alternative 1982 London—where Britain has lost the Falklands War, Margaret Thatcher battles Tony Benn for power, and Alan Turing achieves a breakthrough in artificial intelligence—Machines Like Me powerfully portrays two lovers who will be tested beyond their understanding. Charlie, drifting through life and dodging full-time employment, is in love with Miranda, a bright student who lives with a terrible secret. When Charlie comes into money, he buys Adam, one of the first generation of synthetic humans. With Miranda's assistance, he codesigns Adam's personality. The near-perfect human that emerges is beautiful, strong, and smart—and a love triangle soon forms. Ian McEwan's subversive, gripping novel poses fundamental questions: What makes us human—our outward deeds or our inner lives? Could a machine understand the human heart? This provocative and thrilling tale warns against the power to invent things beyond our control. Don’t miss Ian McEwan’s new novel, Lessons, coming in September!
