Agli inizi del Novecento, nonostante l'unità politica raggiunta nel 1861, gli italiani restavano per lo più estranei tra loro: sudditi dello stesso re, ancora privi dei diritti, delle libertà e dell'istruzione per essere a tutti gli effetti cittadini del nuovo stato. L'Italia era un paese contadino e in gran parte analfabeta. Questo libro narra le tappe del difficile percorso per conquistare una piena cittadinanza: dai primi passi verso la democrazia nell'Italia liberale alla dittatura fascista, dalla costruzione della Repubblica democratica fino a oggi, passando per due conflitti mondiali, una guerra civile e quasi mezzo secolo di guerra fredda. E insieme il passaggio da società rurale a società industriale, i mutamenti di tradizioni, costumi, ideali e ideologie. Un secolo denso di avvenimenti e personaggi, soggetto a interpretazioni controverse. Simona Colarizi tiene presente questo cospicuo patrimonio storiografico e ci presenta un agile racconto rivolto anche a un pubblico di lettori non specialisti, in particolare i giovani che di questo secolo non hanno quasi ricordo diretto.

L’Italie, la papauté, la démocratie chrétienne, l’Europe, ses penseurs et ses cultures, le catholicisme français, et surtout son pôle lyonnais, doté d’une forte identité sociale, les lignes directrices de son oeuvre sont fermes, qui n’empêchent pas un renouvellement incessant, débouchant sur un bilan impressionnant. De cette fécondité scientifique témoignent les nombreux chercheurs (près de cinquante) qui ont participé à ce volume d’hommage. Jean-Dominique Durand est Professeur émérite d’Histoire contemporaine à l’Université Jean Moulin – Lyon 3. Il y a fondé à Lyon l’Institut d’Histoire du Christianisme, qu’il a dirigé de 1989 à 1999. Il a enseigné dans des Universités étrangères, notamment à Rome, à la LUMSA et à l’Université pontificale du Latran. Il a été Conseiller culturel de l’Ambassade de France près le Saint-Siège, et Directeur de l’Institut culturel français de Rome de 1998 à 2002. Il est membre de divers comités scientifiques ou comités de rédaction en France et à l’étranger. Storico, cristiano, cittadino impegnato… I volti pubblici di Jean-Dominique Durand sono molteplici, e se questo volume vuole rendere omaggio in primo luogo alla sua professione di storico, il lettore non può tuttavia dimenticare gli altri aspetti dell’uomo che delineano ulteriormente la sua personalità e che contribuiscono a tracciarne l’itinerario umano e professionale, senza confusioni né contraddizioni, sempre in tensione feconda. L’Italia, il papato, la Democrazia Cristiana, l’Europa, i suoi pensatori e le sue culture, il cattolicesimo francese e soprattutto il suo polo lionese, dotato di una forte identità sociale: le linee direttrici dell’opera di Durand sono solide e al tempo stesso arricchite da un rinnovamento incessante, che porta ad un bilancio impressionante. Jean-Dominique Durand è Professore Emerito di Storia contemporanea all’Université Jean Moulin-Lyon 3. Ha fondato a Lione l’Istituto di Storia del Cristianesimo, che ha diretto dal 1989 al 1999. Ha insegnato presso numerose università straniere fra cui spiccano, a Roma, la LUMSA e la Pontificia Università Lateranense. Ha ricoperto il ruolo di Consigliere culturale dell’Ambasciata di Francia presso la Santa Sede, e di Direttore dell’Istituto Culturale Francese di Roma dal 1998 al 2002.
