In the late Middle Ages, Italy was one of the most urbanized areas in Europe. Its coasts, the Apennines, the perialpine area and the plains were all home to a large number of smaller towns, lands, villages, castra, and 'quasi cites'. These settlements were all very diverse in terms of demographic consistency, social articulation and economic dynamism, but together they constituted a characteristic and constitutive element of the Italian historical identity: an 'original personality'. This volume, thanks to some framing essays and a mapping of individual cases involving most of the northern, central and southern regions, aims at investigating the active research on this topic over the last thirty to forty years.

Ad un anno dallo svolgimento del convegno “Dalla Valdelsa al Conero. Ricerche di archeologia e topografia storica in ricordo di Giuliano de Marinis” il Notiziario della Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Toscana dedica il suo secondo supplemento alla pubblicazione degli atti. Nel testo sono riportate le ricerche e gli studi che amici, colleghi e studiosi del settore hanno voluto dedicare al ricordo di Giuliano de Marinis, ripercorrendo idealmente le fasi del suo lavoro nei ruoli della Soprintendenza: dai primi studi sulla Valdelsa fino al fondamentale apporto all’archeologia delle Marche, passando attraverso le ricerche su Firenze e sull’ager Faesulanus. Non poteva mancare una parte dedicata al restauro, alla valorizzazione ed ai temi di archeologia urbana, ambiti nei quali Giuliano de Marinis rappresenta ancora oggi un punto di riferimento essenziale. Il termine parabola deriva dal greco παραβολή che significa letteralmente comparazione e similitudine (così Wikipedia). Oppure: la parabola è il luogo geometrico dei punti del piano equidistanti da un punto fisso detto fuoco e da una retta detta direttrice, e ha equazione [y=ax2+bx+c] se ha asse verticale. Se assumiamo il tempo come asse orizzontale, per almeno gli ultimi tre secoli, possiamo tracciare una curva secondo la quale il paesaggio si costruisce gradualmente e acquista una fisionomia che viene riconosciuta come pregevole, per poi affrontare una fase declinante nella quale quei valori vengono consumati: pressappoco una parabola, dunque, come quella che subisce un pallone al quale si sia dato un calcio. Lo scopo degli scritti raccolti in questo volume è quello di rintracciare alcuni dei fattori che hanno fornito alla Toscana determinati valori paesaggistici, e anche di comprendere la crisi che questa regione attraversa da più di cinquant’anni, e che si traduce in un processo che possiamo definire di consumo del paesaggio: consumo nel doppio senso dell’uso che ne fa il mercato ma anche dell’erosione materiale che avviene sotto i nostri occhi. Nei lavori qui presentati – che coprono i trent’anni dal 1990 al 2020 – si alternano ricerche svolte presso Università e istituzioni con relazioni nate dalla mobilitazione sempre più diffusa per la tutela del territorio. Anche in questo breve periodo si può riconoscere una sorta di parabola, dall’entusiasmo iniziale per l’occasione di affrontare un tema comunque affascinante alla delusione finale per la difficoltà di cambiare veramente la cultura del territorio, anche quando si dispone di validi strumenti come il Piano del paesaggio della Regione Toscana del 2015. Ma allora più che alla figura geometrica, possiamo riferirci alla parabola nel suo significato originario di comparazione e similitudine, che si presta molto bene a descrivere l’approccio scientifico ai temi del territorio che troviamo nelle figure dei naturalisti viaggiatori che hanno cominciato a descrivere la regione dal Settecento in poi, e ai quali viene dato molto spazio in questo volume. Il modo che avevano questi scienziati di combinare le conoscenze della storia umana con quelle della storia naturale è ancora quello che ci deve guidare nello studio e nella tutela dell’insieme di valori che chiamiamo paesaggio.
