Following Italy's unification in 1861, architects, artists, politicians, and literati engaged in volatile debates over the pursuit of national and regional identity. Growing industrialization and urbanization across the country contrasted with the rediscovery of traditionally built forms and objects created by the agrarian peasantry. Pride in Modesty argues that these ordinary, often anonymous, everyday things inspired and transformed Italian art and architecture from the 1920s through the 1970s. Through in-depth examinations of texts, drawings, and buildings, Michelangelo Sabatino finds that the folk traditions of the pre-industrial countryside have provided formal, practical, and poetic inspiration directly affecting both design and construction practices over a period of sixty years and a number of different political regimes. This surprising continuity allows Sabatino to reject the division of Italian history into sharply delimited periods such as Fascist Interwar and Democratic Postwar and to instead emphasize the long, continuous process that transformed pastoral and urban ideals into a new, modernist Italy.

Attraverso le cronache di viaggiatori e studiosi si percorre un'epoca, e sopratutto un luogo, in cui uno stato di emergenza tramuta le zone sinistrate in territorio di studio e sperimentazione, dove il testo chiave dell'esperienza pianificatoria sarà L'Istruzione sul metodo da tenersi né paesi diruti della Calabria in cui l'architetto Vincenzo Ferraresi si appropria delle teorie dell'embelissement enunciate, nel 1753, da Marc-Antoine Laugier nell'Essai sur l'architecture. I piani urbanistici, tracciati dagli architetti regi, testimoniano l'intenzione di applicare un intervento territoriale su larga scala, che assume particolare significato nell'adozione di una prassi inconsueta sia in Italia, sia all'estero e che, malgrado gli esiti problematici, condizionerà fortemente lo sviluppo urbano della Provincia. Cosí come confermano i catasti post-unitari, fonte documentale di particolare importanza per la conoscenza storica dei sistemi insediativi, ma soprattutto inedita verifica di quanto, dell'audace esperimento illuminista, si sia tramandato nel passaggio fra l'utopia del progetto e la reale applicazione sul territorio.

Earth’s fractured geology is visible in its fault lines. It is along these lines that earthquakes occur, sometimes with disastrous effects. These disturbances can significantly influence urban development, as seen in the aftermath of two earthquakes in Messina, Italy, in 1908 and in the Belice Valley, Sicily, in 1968.
