Lo storico ha il compito di trasmettere la memoria, il dovere di ricordare. Quando, invece, è necessario dimenticare? Quando l'oblio diventa una virtù essenziale a ricomporre una comunità? Nell'Atene del V secolo, dopo il regime dei Trenta Tiranni, venne imposto il Patto dell'oblio, che vietava di "rivangare il passato" anche a quei cittadini che avrebbero avuto tutti i titoli per vendicarsi, "anteponendo alle rivalse private la salvezza della città". Da allora sono state innumerevoli le volte in cui la storia ci ha imposto di dimenticare, di concederci una sospensione della memoria per rimettere le cose in ordine, sia pure in un ordine provvisorio. Oggi, dopo la fine del Novecento - il secolo delle febbri ideologiche e delle grandi passioni politiche -, fare i conti con la nostra memoria condivisa è diventato più che mai necessario. Perché la scomparsa di fascismo e comunismo non ha significato la fine dell'uso politico del passato: "Nuove dottrine e nuovi radicalismi sono entrati in campo e si sono mescolati con quel che rimaneva delle vecchie fedi; tutte insieme poi hanno viziato l'aria, rendendo impossibile agli analisti e ai raccontatori del passato di prendere il fiato necessario per un'impresa che potesse dirsi di grande respiro". Queste pagine attraversano oltre due millenni di storia, di storie e di uomini, ma anche di interpretazioni, errori di valutazione e menzogne. Dalla Firenze di Savonarola alla Roma fascista, dall'inquisizione allo schiavismo, da Giuda a Napoleone, l'autore intraprende un viaggio coraggioso e appassionato nella memoria intermittente, con la convinzione che, se saremo capaci di fare i conti con la storia senza preconcetti o pregiudizi, ci imbatteremo in non poche sorprese e forse saremo in grado di "ritrovare una base comune da cui avventurarci nella ricerca sul passato".

This book investigates the effects of corpus work on the process of foreign language learning in ESP settings. It suggests that observing learners at work with corpus data can stimulate discussion and re-thinking of the pedagogical implications of both the theoretical and empirical aspects of corpus linguistics. The ideas presented here are developed from the Data-Driven Learning approach introduced by Tim Johns in the early nineties. The experience of watching students perform corpus analysis provides the basis for the two main observations in the book: a) corpus work provides students with a useful source of information about ESP language features, b) the process of "search-and-discovery" implied in the method of corpus analysis may facilitate language learning and promote autonomy in learning language use. The discussion is carried out on the basis of a series of corpus-based "explorations" by students and provides suggestions for developing new tasks and tools for language learners.
