Four-year-old Carolyn Christian was playing outside her home in Alabama when she found herself standing in front of an old door. Curious, Carolyn looked through the keyhole and saw something she would remember for the rest of her life. It was at that moment that she learned that God was watching out for her—always. Carolyn chronicles her life from age two to present, telling the story of how she found God even through her most challenging moments. Carolyn shares not only poignant, but also humorous anecdotes that detail unforgettable moments from her childhood like the time she pretended to be tipsy from drinking the communion wine at church and the evening she mashed potatoes without draining the water, ending up with potato juice instead. As Carolyn discloses the confusion she felt as a young girl when she was sexually molested by a family friend, she also shares an inspirational message that God provided her with strength, even during her darkest hours. By offering an honest and self-disclosing glimpse into her life story, Carolyn inspires women everywhere to trust that God will always live in their hearts.

What you believe about God sets the foundation of the person you will become. In God Has a Name, pastor and New York Times bestselling author John Mark Comer invites you to rethink many of the prevalent myths and misconceptions about God and weigh them against what God actually tells us about himself. After all, what you believe about God will ultimately shape the type of person you become. We all live at the mercy of our ideas, and nowhere is this more true than our ideas about God. The problem is many of our ideas about God are wrong. Not all wrong, but wrong enough to form our souls in detrimental and disheartening ways. God Has a Name is a simple yet profound guide to understanding God in a new light--focusing on what God says about himself in the Bible. This one shift has the potential to radically alter how you relate to God, not as a doctrine, but as a relational being who responds to you in an elastic, back-and-forth way. John Mark Comer takes you line by line through Exodus 34:6-8--Yahweh's self-revelation on Mount Sinai, one of the most quoted passages in the Bible. Along the way, Comer addresses some of the most profound questions he came across as he studied these noted lines in Exodus, including: Why do we feel this gap between us and God? Could it be that a lot of what we think about God is wrong? Not all wrong, but wrong enough to mess up how we relate to him? What if our "God" is really a projection of our own identity, ideas, and desires? What if the real God is different, but far better than we could ever imagine? No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, God Has a Name invites you to step into a fresh and biblically rooted vision of who God is that has the potential to alter your life with God and shape who you become.

Jewish humor, with its rational skepticism and cutting social criticism, permeates American popular culture. Scholars of humor--from Sigmund Freud to Woody Allen--have studied the essence of the Jewish joke, at once a defense mechanism against a hostile world and a means of cultural affirmation. Where did this wit originate? Why do Jewish humorists work at the margins of so many diverse cultures? What accounts for the longevity of the Jewish joke? Do oppressed people, as African American author Ralph Ellison suggested, slip their yoke when they change the joke? Citing examples from prominent humorists and stand-up comics, this book examines the phenomenon of Jewish humor from its biblical origins to its prevalence in the modern diaspora, revealing a mother lode of wit in language, literature, folklore, music and history.

Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8). The Bible progressively reveals a glorious description of God the Father, beginning with Moses in the book of Genesis and ending with what John saw in the book of Revelation. The author has done massive research showing that the Bible is full of descriptions of the glory of God. This is a unique book, one of kind, about the visual glory of God. It is incredible that nothing has been written about this aspect of the glory of God since one of the basic meanings of glory is visual brilliance and splendor. It is true that no man has seen God because He has hidden him Himself for several reasons. Man would die if he saw Him. Man would make an idol of Him. God desires that man have faith in an unseen God. Many theologians maintain that God cannot be seen, that He has no face or form because He is spirit, invisible, and omnipresent. The book addresses these concepts. Jesus, however, said that He has seen God and that angels see His face. This book should be in the shelves of every seminary, Bible school, minister's study, and in the hand of every person as a help in Bible study or in seeking to know more about God. May it inspire every Christian to anticipate that day in heaven when they shall see Jesus and God the Father.

"Humor is the most celebrated of all Jewish responses to modernity. In this book, Ruth Wisse evokes and applauds the genius of spontaneous Jewish joking--as well as the brilliance of comic masterworks by writers like Heinrich Heine, Sholem Aleichem, Isaac Babel, S. Y. Agnon, Isaac Bashevis Singer, and Philip Roth. At the same time, Wisse draws attention to the precarious conditions that call Jewish humor into being--and the price it may exact from its practitioners and audience"--

"Against the Inveterate Obduracy of the Jews represents a turning point in medieval anti-Jewish polemics. On the one hand, the polemic's intention--to bring about the conversion of the Jews--is predicated on an assumption that Jews are rational agents who may be persuaded of Christian truths by philosophical argument, empirical evidence, and proper biblical exegesis. On the other hand, Peter also introduced the notion that the Jews' enduring "blindness" stems from a persistent strain of bestial irrationality, for which they themselves are responsible. Peter traces this irrationality to the medieval Jews' commitment to the Talmud. Peter is the first medieval Christian author to name the Talmud explicitly. The Jewish convert to Christianity, Petrus Alfonsi, had ridiculed Talmudic folklore in his Dialogue Against the Jews. Peter the Venerable borrowed from but also surpassed Alfonsi's critique, as even his use of the name Talmud indicates. By emphasizing the irrationality of the Jews, Peter cast doubt upon their essential humanity and paved the way toward an increasingly violent treatment of the Jewish minority in medieval Christendom. Perhaps for this reason, Peter's Against the Inveterate Obduracy of the Jews has been popular among modern anti-Semites as well."--Publisher description.
