Ottobre 1943. Il rimorchiatore Priamar lascia Pianosa, a bordo quattordici detenuti giudicati indesiderabili, sei membri dell’equipaggio e una scorta di militari tedeschi. Su questo sfondo inedito fiorisce una delicata storia d’amore. Il viaggio si conclude drammaticamente all’Elba, seguendo una logica perversa che il comandante del Priamar, tornato sull’isola vent’anni dopo, tenta di penetrare. L’avvincente romanzo storico ripercorre le tracce lasciate nella memoria popolare da un episodio realmente accaduto, rappresentativo di un’epoca: quella dell’Italia nell’incubo indotto dall’armistizio.

Marzo 1939, il cargo Cayetana Ramirez lascia la Spagna con un carico di combattenti repubblicani in fuga di fronte alle truppe nazionaliste, vittoriose nella Guerra civile. Nelle sue stive si trova parte della cassa del Soccorso Rosso del POUM, il Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista, destinata a essere trasferita in America. Quando comprendono che verranno proditoriamente internati dalle autorità francesi i militanti decidono di nascondere il denaro in una cala sottocoperta. La Cayetana, sequestrata e messa all’asta, viene acquistata da un armatore italiano e giunge nel porto di Livorno, dove diventa Dina Teis. Quando ottiene il permesso di riprendere il mare, la nave porta con sé, imbarcati rispettivamente come fuochista e come meccanico, Tazio Romano, un agente dei servizi segreti fascisti, e Amadeo Carloni, un membro della cellula locale del POUM, entrambi incaricati di recuperare il denaro. Nel contesto della vita di bordo, animato anche dalla presenza di uno studente ebreo imbarcato come carbonaio e di un giovane ingrassatore anarchico, Romano e Carloni si toglieranno la maschera per dare inizio a un duello senza esclusione di colpi sullo sfondo dei porti del Mediterraneo e dell’Atlantico. Con lo scoppio della Seconda guerra mondiale e l’affondamento della Dina Teis le missioni di Romano e Carloni perdono ogni senso ma essi, accecati dalle rispettive ideologie, insistono nella loro lotta, divenendo il simbolo dell’assurda contrapposizione di posizioni estreme anche quando la Storia si è ormai incaricata di renderle del tutto anacronistiche. Di contro il mare, sullo sfondo, riflette ancora una volta la mutevolezza delle cose umane.

There are good reasons to look at violence from new perspectives. In its endless manifestations violence is part and parcel of human existence, and is very probably a constituting element of human society. And yet violent action - warfare, penalties, insults, feuding, assault, murder, rape, suicide, sports - remains in all its complexity one of the least understood fields of human social life.The book's contributors identify the symbolic and ritualized aspects of violence, and suggest ways of 'reading' violence as it occurs in the world, whether as violent duelling and age-group violence in Southern Ethiopia, bullfighting in Iberia, cattle rustling in Kenya, guerrilla and militia wars in Colombia, or public executions in China.These case studies suggest that 'violence' is not a simple, universal urge, but is contingent and context-dependent, shaped by social relations of power, force and dominance. To be the victim of violence is a humiliating and frightening experience. But the many ambiguities that occur in the use of violence must be considered, to understand why peace seems only to exist as a contrast to the violation of peace.
