Leibniz, per esempio, che si interessò agli scacchi, ai dadi e alle carte, si disse «decisamente favorevole allo studio dei giochi logici, non per il piacere proprio del gioco, ma perché sono di grande aiuto nello sviluppare l'arte della riflessione». Sulla scia di Cardano e Galileo, Pascal si avvicinò ai dadi; volendo capire quale numero fosse più conveniente puntare, giunse a stabilire i primi fondamenti del calcolo delle probabilità. E scrisse: «È come tale scienza, che è cominciata con gli studi dei giochi d'azzardo, si sia elevata ai più importanti oggetti delle conoscenze umane». In tempi più recenti Giuseppe Peano, il cui pensiero influenzò in modo decisivo quello di Russell, scrisse un libro di giochi e problemi logico-matematici, qui ripresi in parte. Uno dei maggiori matematici viventi, John Conway, ha elaborato un algoritmo grazie al quale è possibile scoprire in quale giorno della settimana cadde qualsiasi data del passato. Com'è noto, la matematica non è un'opinione bensì una sfida, ma per affinare la capacità di riflettere sono necessarie intuizione e creatività. Il gioco è la via più semplice per superare blocchi e timori legati alla scienza dei numeri. Chi, giovane o meno, ama il divertimento stimolante troverà in queste pagine molte occasioni per mettere alla prova la propria intelligenza.
