More From Less written by Andrew McAfee and has been published by Scribner this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-08 with Business & Economics categories.
From the coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Second Machine Age, a compelling argument—masterfully researched and brilliantly articulated—that we have at last learned how to increase human prosperity while treading more lightly on our planet. Throughout history, the only way for humanity to grow was by degrading the Earth: chopping down forests, fouling the air and water, and endlessly digging out resources. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, the reigning argument has been that taking better care of the planet means radically changing course: reducing our consumption, tightening our belts, learning to share and reuse, restraining growth. Is that argument correct? Absolutely not. In More from Less, McAfee argues that to solve our ecological problems we don’t need to make radical changes. Instead, we need to do more of what we’re already doing: growing technologically sophisticated market-based economies around the world. How can he possibly make this claim? Because of the evidence. America—a large, high-tech country that accounts for about 25% of the global economy—is now generally using less of most resources year after year, even as its economy and population continue to grow. What’s more, the US is polluting the air and water less, emitting fewer greenhouse gases, and replenishing endangered animal populations. And, as McAfee shows, America is not alone. Other countries are also transforming themselves in fundamental ways. What has made this turnabout possible? One thing, primarily: the collaboration between technology and capitalism, although good governance and public awareness have also been critical. McAfee does warn of issues that haven’t been solved, like global warming, overfishing, and communities left behind as capitalism and tech progress race forward. But overall, More from Less is a revelatory, paradigm-shifting account of how we’ve stumbled into an unexpectedly better balance with nature—one that holds out the promise of more abundant and greener centuries ahead.

What I Have Learned... (or Nonagenarian Natterings) (Trafford, 2012) might be considered a sequel to my Through the Eyes of a Concerned Liberal published in 2004. This sequel explains what I believe about various aspects of life and living (i.e., why I believe what I do; and what I sought to do about it all.) It could prove interesting to anyone facing the same or similar life problems in this crazy world that is becoming more scary as I write these words. What I say here should be easily intelligible-if not agreeable! -to any reasonably intelligent, concerned member of North American society. My historical interpretation laced with philosophical under girding led me to a belief that human civilization must be accepted as an adventure. How could it be regarded otherwise? As a young adult, I entered the realm of life assessment by seeking a purpose for my life. I accepted the philosophical stance known as pragmatism at this point, while seeking to solidify my acceptance of political and social liberalism as guidance throughout my life. I soon discovered the ever-present need to make defensible ethical decisions based on a wise choice of values. This matter was confounded by what I gradually saw as the ever-increasing need to counteract Americas value orientation as the world moves along in the 21st century. To do this I had to be sure that I was on the right track. I did this by finding myself once again through self-evaluation of my philosophic and socio-political stances. Hence, I encourage all North Americans to re-examine their values while embracing a modified form of postmodernism. Finally, I can only hope that America will come to its senses. America must somehow live up to the values it so glibly espouses

More Love Less Panic written by Claude Knobler and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-02 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
In this heartwarming and hilarious memoir, Claude Knobler describes how he learned the hard way that the apple actually can fall far from the tree—and that’s Okay. Already the biological parents of a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter, Claude Knobler and his wife decided to adopt Nati, a five-year-old Ethiopian boy who seemed different from Knobler in every conceivable way. After more than five years spent trying to turn his wild, silly, adopted African son into a quiet, neurotic, Jewish guy like himself, Knobler realized the importance of having the courage to love, accept, and let go of his children. In this wonderfully written memoir, Knobler explains how his experiences raising Nati led him to learn a lesson that applied equally well to parenting his biological children: It’s essential to spend the time we are given with our children to love them and enjoy them, rather than push and mold them into who we think they should be.

Making Minds Less Well Educated Than Our Own written by Roger C. Schank and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-26 with Education categories.
In the author's words: "This book is an honest attempt to understand what it means to be educated in today's world." His argument is this: No matter how important science and technology seem to industry or government or indeed to the daily life of people, as a society we believe that those educated in literature, history, and other humanities are in some way better informed, more knowing, and somehow more worthy of the descriptor "well educated." This 19th-century conception of the educated mind weighs heavily on our notions on how we educate our young. When we focus on intellectual and scholarly issues in high school as opposed to issues, such as communications, basic psychology, or child raising, we are continuing to rely on outdated notions of the educated mind that come from elitist notions of who is to be educated and what that means. To accommodate the realities of today's world it is necessary to change these elitist notions. We need to rethink what it means to be educated and begin to focus on a new conception of the very idea of education. Students need to learn how to think, not how to accomplish tasks, such as passing standardized tests and reciting rote facts. In this engaging book, Roger C. Schank sets forth the premises of his argument, cites its foundations in the Great Books themselves, and illustrates it with examples from an experimental curriculum that has been used in graduate schools and with K-12 students. Making Minds Less Well Educated Than Our Own is essential reading for scholars and students in the learning sciences, instructional design, curriculum theory and planning, educational policy, school reform, philosophy of education, higher education, and anyone interested in what it means to be educated in today's world.
