Che i libri si possano incontrare – prima ancora che leggere – così come si incontrano «altri fenomeni della vita e del pensiero», e che della vita facciano parte «quanto gli alberi, le stelle, o il letame», è l'aureo presupposto su cui poggia questo «libro sui libri» di Henry Miller, caso anomalo e inclassificabile, riconducibile forse soltanto al genere immaginario dell'autobibliografia. Pochi scrittori hanno saputo rivelare se stessi come Miller attraverso quegli incontri, e queste pagine, lungi dall'essere un catalogo erudito, assomigliano piuttosto a una tortuosa e camuffata confessione. Dall'eccentrico estremo di John Cowper Powys a Richard Jefferies, panpsichista romantico, dall'adorato Cendrars a Jean Giono e Rider Haggard: "I libri nella mia vita" è anche una guida preziosa, che permette di scoprire e riscoprire, accanto ai grandi intoccabili della letteratura, una vasta tribù di autori sconosciuti o presto dimenticati, ma non per questo meno vivi. La storia segreta di ogni vero lettore non è fatta di tutti i libri che ha letto, e nemmeno di quelli più significativi o più belli – sembra avvertirci Miller –, ma soprattutto di alcuni, a volte non più di una manciata, che si distanziano enormemente dagli altri. Sono quei libri che, «come certi rari individui, aumentano la vita», e sembra siano stati scritti apposta per noi. Per riconoscerli non esiste via certa: occorre farsi strada abbandonandosi al caso – «se l'occhio è sempre vigile, e la mente sempre all'erta, il caso finisce per darci la soluzione» –, lasciarsi andare al «gioco dell'inseguimento», e tenere bene a mente il celebre motto di Napoleone: «Non andrà lontano chi sa in anticipo dove vuole andare».
