We are at the beginning of a great new cycle, a second Renaissance of technology and mind, spirit and creative energy. It´s the time when the noosphere experience evoked by Teilhard de Chardin is coming into being James Joyce spoke of “closing time” in Finnegans Wake. Leonard Cohen wrote a song with this title. The philosopher Norman O. Brown wrote a philosophical-poetic work called Closing Time in 1973 in which he proposed the end of one era and the beginning of new mysteries. He did so by combining Joyce and Vico. Our work is a reply and an extension of theirs. But we are contemplating and exploring openings. What does it mean to stand in the open of the noosphere of new consciousness? What does it mean to be at the opening of a cycle of being and becoming? Opening Time is a threshold process that combines text, images, sound, delivery agency, and hypertext in a bold experiment that explores the nature of openings in ideas, stories, pictures, music, and the internet. Pastoral Drama and Healing in Early Modern Italy represents the first full-length study to confront seriously the well-rehearsed analogy of the pastoral poet as healer. Usually associated with the edifying function of the Renaissance pastoral, this analogy, if engaged more profoundly, raises a number of questions that remain unanswered to this day. How does the pastoral heal? How exactly do the inner workings of the text cater to the healing? What socio-cultural conventions make the healing possible? What are the major problems that pastoral poetry as mimesis must overcome to make its healing morally legitimate? In the wake of Derrida's seminal work on the Platonic pharmakon, which has in turn led recent criticism to formulate a much more concrete understanding of the theater/drug analogy, the stringent approach to the therapeutic function of the Renaissance pastoral offered in this work provides a valuable critical tool to unpack the complexity contained within a little-understood cliché.

Contrary to widely held assumptions, the early modern revival of ps-Longinus' On the Sublime did not begin with the adaptation published by Boileau in 1674; it was not connected solely with the Greek editions that began to appear from 1554; nor was its impact limited to rhetoric and literature. Manuscript copies began to circulate in Quattrocento Italy, but very few have been studied. Neither have the ways the sublime was used, in rhetoric and literature, but also in the arts, architecture and the theatre been studied in any systematic way. The present volume is a first attempt to chart the early modern translations of Peri hupsous, both in the literal sense of the history of its dissemination by means of editions, versions and translations in Latin and vernacular languages, but also in the figurative sense of its uses and transformations in the visual arts in the period from the first early modern editions of Longinus until its popularization by Boileau. Contributors include Francis Goyet, Hana Gründler, Lydia Hamlett, Sigrid de Jong, Helen Langdon, Bram Van Oostveldt, Eugenio Refini, Paul Smith, and Dietmar Till.
