Gallup recently found that 49 percent of Americans believe that the government poses “an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens.” I’m from the Government and I’m Here to Kill You, written by a former federal attorney, shows that even the 49 percent have no idea how bad things really are. Rights and freedoms are not the only things at stake; all too often government imperils the very lives of those it supposedly serves. Federal employees have, with legal impunity, blown up a town and killed six hundred people, released staggering amounts of radioactive contamination and lied about the resulting cancer, allowed people to die of an easily treated disease in order to study their deaths, and run guns to Mexican drug cartels in hopes of expanding agency powers. Law enforcement leaders have ordered their subordinates to commit murder. Medical administrators have “cooked the books” and allowed patients to die, while raking in plump bonuses. Federal prosecutors have sent Americans to prison while concealing evidence that proved their innocence. I’m from the Government documents how we came to this pass: American courts misconstrued and expanded the old legal concept of sovereign immunity, “the king can do no wrong.” When Congress attempted to allow suits against the government, the legislators used vague language that the courts construed to block most lawsuits. The result is a legal system that allows official negligence to escape legal consequences and paradoxically punishes an agency if it tries to secure public safety. I’m from the Government ends with proposals for legal reforms that will hold the government and its servants accountable when they inflict harm on Americans.

Medicare and Social Security are in trouble, and no one can agree on how to fund it, manage it, or control it. Thats what certain elements within the United States government want people to believe. But in the secret back rooms of power, a diabolical plan has been hatched. These hushed negotiations propose a true fix to the Medicare and Social Security cash crunch: kill thirty million baby boomers. Their plan is all the more insidious for its methodology; the deaths will be masked as the unfortunate cost of a terrible act of nature. In Project Bluebird, the CIA developed a man-made avian flu to be used against terrorist cells plotting attacks against the United States. Once it was ready for use, however, the government deemed it too draconian, and the entire project was buried. Now, years later, Project Bluebird has been reborn and repurposed. The powerful and ambitious sociopath behind the plan, White House Chief of Staff Carrington B. Massengale III, intends to use it to rid the US of baby boomers while catapulting himself into highest office in the land. Much to his consternation, Cynthia Wood, the nations first female president, stands firmly in his way. Only two men outside this inner circle know of the plot, and now they are running for their lives. They must do everything they can to stay ahead of the government assassins and share the evidence before its too late.

From the woman who wrote the law on stalking comes the story of the chilling experiences that shaped her career. Stalking is among the most ancient, common, and widely-discussed of all anti-social behaviors, yet this dangerous behavior is underappreciated as a serious problem. Anyone can be a stalker, and anyone can be a stalking victim—especially today with so much personal information readily available online. Prosecutor Rhonda B. Saunders has made a career of battling this form of attack. She has prosecuted on behalf of celebrities, including Madonna, Steven Spielberg, and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as countless ordinary individuals chose, for whatever reason, as prey. Now Saunders shares the pivotal stories from her career, how she developed the legal weapons to fight stalking, and offers powerful insight into the minds and habits of stalkers, as well as how anyone can protect against them. “[A] fascinating and authoritative inside look at the legal and psychological aspects of this frightening phenomenon.”—New York Times bestselling author Vincent Bugliosi “Saunders . . . engrossingly explores the menacing crime of stalking . . . Readers will be intrigued.”—Publishers Weekly

The Films Of Hal Ashby written by Christopher Beach and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Performing Arts categories.

Analyzes the films and filmmaking career of director Hal Ashby, placing his work in the cultural context of filmmaking in the 1970s. Hal Ashby directed eleven feature films over the course of his career and was an important figure in the Hollywood Renaissance of the late 1960s and 1970s. Though he was a member of the same generation of filmmakers as Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Robert Altman, Ashby has received comparatively little critical or scholarly validation for his work. Author Christopher Beach argues that despite his lower profile, Ashby was an exceptionally versatile and unusually creative director. Beach focuses primarily on Ashby's first seven films--The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, Shampoo, Bound for Glory, Coming Home, and Being There--to analyze Ashby's contributions to filmmaking culture in the 1970s. The first two chapters of this volume provide an overview of Ashby's filmmaking career, as Beach makes the case for Ashby's status as an auteur and provides a biographical survey of Ashby's most productive and successful decade, the 1970s. In the following chapters, Beach analyzes groups of films to uncover important thematic concerns in Ashby's work, including the treatment of a young male protagonist in The Landlord and Harold and Maude, the representation of the U.S. military in The Last Detail and Coming Home, and the role of television and mass media in Shampoo and Being There. Beach also examines the crucial role of the musical score in Ashby's films, as well as the rapid decline of the director's career after Being There. The Films of Hal Ashby is based on Beach's extensive use of unpublished archival materials, as well as a number of interviews with actors, directors, producers, cinematographers, and others involved in the making of Ashby's films. This volume will interest film and television scholars, as well as readers interested in filmmakers of the 1970s.
