A celebration of the remarkable poem vessels of Dave the Potter David Drake, also known as Dave the Potter, was born enslaved in Edgefield in the backcountry of South Carolina near the Savannah River. Despite laws prohibiting enslaved people from learning to read or write, David was literate and signed some of his pots. His practice was not only to add his name and a date but also to embellish his work with verse—a powerful statement of resistance. The Words and Wares of David Drake collects multifaceted scholarship about David and his craft. Building on the 1998 national traveling exhibit catalog, I Made This Jar: The Life and Works of Enslaved African-American Potter, Dave, and featuring more than one hundred beautiful images and six new essays, this authoritative volume presents the diverse perspectives of scholars, artists, and collectors. The Words and Wares of David Drake adds important depth and context to our understanding of both Edgefield pottery and the life of Dave. David's work is now so highly prized it is the cornerstone of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's traveling exhibit of nineteenth-century ceramic art from Edgefield. American Art To 1900 written by Sarah Burns and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-01 with Art categories.

From the simple assertion that "words matter" in the study of visual art, this comprehensive but eminently readable volume gathers an extraordinary selection of words—painters and sculptors writing in their diaries, critics responding to a sensational exhibition, groups of artists issuing stylistic manifestos, and poets reflecting on particular works of art. Along with a broad array of canonical texts, Sarah Burns and John Davis have assembled an astonishing variety of unknown, little known, or undervalued documents to convey the story of American art through the many voices of its contemporary practitioners, consumers, and commentators. American Art to 1900 highlights such critically important themes as women artists, African American representation and expression, regional and itinerant artists, Native Americans and the frontier, popular culture and vernacular imagery, institutional history, and more. With its hundreds of explanatory headnotes providing essential context and guidance to readers, this book reveals the documentary riches of American art and its many intersecting histories in unprecedented breadth, depth, and detail.

Historic Bottle And Jar Closures written by Nathan E Bender and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

This book presents a much-needed review of commercial closures for bottles and jars used in America prior to World War II. Archaeological attention to commercial closures has been rather limited. This is surprising given that data derived from bottles and jars pertain to a wide range of studies, including chronological control, trade, site functions, and methods of manufacture. Closures are an integral part of these studies, becoming particularly important after a spectacular variety of metal and glass caps in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This volume-provides a comprehensive review, including detailed closure definitions, as well as glass finishes;-discusses the history of the development and impact of the hermetic seal in commercial closures;-will appeal to students, professionals, and collectors studying this common historic artifact class.

Learn how to make over fifty Mason jar projects, including luminaries, planters, and upcycled art, with this amazing guide. Mason Jar Nation begins by exploring the Mason jar's impact on America since its 1858 patent. Prior to the jar's invention, settlers had no reliable and safe way to store food for the winter, which required them to travel great lengths in difficult conditions and obtain expensive canned goods in order to survive. With its hermetically sealable two-piece lid and thick glass sides, the Mason jar changed the way mid-nineteenth century Americans fed their families. Although the popularity of the jars ebbed significantly from the 1950s until the turn of the century, interest in them has exploded in the past few years. Ball, the biggest brand name in Mason jars today, has seen its sales double since 2001. Younger generations, including Millennials, have adopted the iconic jars as emblems of a more sustainable time. The humble Mason jar has been "discovered" as a versatile and beautiful material for creating craft items such as chandeliers, luminaries, planters, containers, and upcycled art. The second half of Mason Jar Nation features over fifty of these adaptations, shown with clear photography, all designed and photographed by author JoAnn Moser, the "DIY Maven." Readers who appreciate American cultural history, making fun and affordable crafts, and Mason jars themselves will love this book.
