Sempre sul solco della sorniona ironia che lo caratterizza, Mariani assembla così delle piccole perle, capaci di mescolare uno spirito ridanciano e godereccio con gli interessi letterari, scientifici e filosofici dell’autore. Un affresco impetuoso e lucidissimo di un’Italia che, uscita dalla Prima Guerra Mondiale, stava precipitando nel baratro del fascismo... Mario Mariani (1883-1951) nasce a Roma. Cresciuto a Solarolo, ultima i suoi studi nella capitale. Nel 1907 decide di trasferirsi a Berlino, dove inizia a lavorare come corrispondente. Nel 1911 sposa la ballerina Maria Biondi, da cui si separa già durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale (combattuta in prima linea come ufficiale degli Alpini). Trasferitosi a Milano, pubblica i primi racconti e, dopo aver fondato varie riviste, abbandona definitivamente l’Italia in polemica con l’ascesa del fascismo. Dopo lunghe peregrinazioni, trascorrerà gli ultimi anni in Sud America, morendo a Rio de Janeiro. La sua produzione letteraria, che spazia dalle poesie giovanili alla narrativa, è stata pubblicata integralmente da Sonzogno (1947-1951) e consta di titoli dal grande valore, come "Antelucano", "Sott' la naja. Vita e guerra d'alpini" e "Vent’anni dopo".
